Okanogan-Wenatchee/Lone Fir
Overview
Lone Fir Campground offers a quintessential Pacific Northwest camping experience within the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest. Located along the scenic North Cascades Highway, this destination serves as a peaceful retreat for those exploring the rugged beauty of Washington’s high country. The campground is well-regarded for its accessibility to high-altitude landscapes and its role as a gateway to the majestic North Cascades wilderness, providing an authentic connection to nature and a sense of solitude.
Location & Surroundings
Situated just west of Mazama, the park is nestled in a dense forest of lodgepole pine and subalpine fir. Its location near the crest of the Cascade Range means visitors are surrounded by dramatic mountain peaks and deep glacial valleys. The soothing sounds of Early Winters Creek provide a natural soundtrack to the campsite, creating an atmosphere of deep seclusion despite the proximity to the main highway route, making it a scenic stop for travelers.
Amenities & Park Features
As a traditional forest service site, Lone Fir focuses on a rustic camping experience rather than luxury amenities. The park offers paved loops suitable for various RV sizes, though it is primarily designed for dry camping with no hookups. Essential park features include:
- Vault toilets and hand-pumped potable water stations
- Individual fire rings and heavy-duty picnic tables at each site
- Paved parking spurs to assist with basic vehicle leveling
Visitors should arrive with full tanks and supplies to enjoy this minimalist mountain environment.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The area is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts seeking adventure. The Lone Fir Interpretive Trail is an easy loop directly from the campground, while the more challenging Cutthroat Lake trail is a short drive away. Only a few miles west, travelers can reach the Washington Pass Overlook, offering one of the most photographed vistas in the state. The charming community of Mazama provides a nearby stop for famous baked goods, local coffee, and mountain supplies.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for self-contained RVers who prioritize scenery and trail access over modern resort conveniences. It is a perfect fit for hikers and photographers wanting to be near the North Cascades National Park boundary. If you are looking for a quiet mountain escape and do not mind trading cell service for starlit nights, Lone Fir is an excellent choice. It is especially popular during the summer and early autumn larch season.

As of Oct 2024: arrived to the campground to find a sign stating it’s closed due to unstable trees that could fall in high winds. That being said, it is not blocked off and the bathrooms are opened and clean; plenty of people still camping there. No running water. Nice sites, stayed three nights!

Stayed the night on the way to the gorge, beautiful drive East along HWY 20. Running water, but no threaded head for hoses could lead to difficulties filling up with water. One or two large pull through for the big rigs out there (site 2 and 23). No recycling, which leads to lots of cans and bottles on the dumpster. Signage, starting to show signs of wear…a little difficult to read when dark. Most sites have flat areas for vehicles or tents. Non-flushing toilets, but overall clean and well kept. Despite being close to the hwy, was a quiet night.

One of my fave campgrounds, right alongside Colonial Creek Campground in terms of views and accessibility

Honestly, I just came to this location to use the bathroom along my way. But, I can see how people who are looking for a more relaxed version of the outdoors could enjoy this kind of location. It is definitely something someone with an RV or who is not really big on roughing it could enjoy the outdoors without having to really push the envelope. The scenery in the general area is definitely worth it. I don't know how much it may cost to camp here, that is for you to look up.
