Okobojo Point Recreation Area

Overview

Okobojo Point Recreation Area offers a serene retreat on the eastern shores of Lake Oahe. Unlike the more bustling parks nearby, this destination provides a peaceful lakeside experience that captures the rugged beauty of central South Dakota. RVers will find a spacious layout that emphasizes the natural landscape, making it an excellent choice for those looking to disconnect and enjoy the rhythmic sounds of the Missouri River. It serves as a quiet alternative for travelers who value space and scenery over commercial frills.

Location & Surroundings

Situated approximately 18 miles north of the state capital, the park is nestled within the Oahe Dam region. The surroundings are characterized by wide-open prairie vistas and the expansive blue waters of the reservoir. Its unique position on a peninsula provides travelers with stunning waterfront views and cool breezes, creating a distinct sense of isolation while remaining within a short drive of the grocery stores and services found in Pierre and Fort Pierre.

Amenities & Park Features

The park features a selection of campsites, including several electric hookup sites suitable for various RV sizes. While the facilities are more basic than a high-end commercial resort, guests have access to a well-maintained boat ramp and a dock, which are central to the park's appeal. The site includes the following features for visitors:

  • Spacious sites with electrical service
  • Convenient boat launch and loading dock
  • Vault toilets and picnic shelters
  • On-site playground for families

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Water sports are the primary draw here, with world-class walleye fishing topping the list for most visitors. Boating, kayaking, and swimming along the shoreline are popular ways to spend the day. For a change of pace, a short drive south leads to the Oahe Dam Visitor Center and the historic sites of Pierre, where the South Dakota State Capitol offers beautiful architecture and informative guided tours for those interested in local history.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts and anglers who prioritize direct access to the water over high-end luxury amenities. It is a perfect fit for self-contained RVers who appreciate a quiet, natural setting and the freedom of a more rustic camping style. Absolutely stunning. Beautiful beach. They have a little shelter down the way a little bit of a bathroom. I think a shower cause there’s a Campground there. You drive back about 2 miles on a gravel road. It’s not bad. Then you hit pavement and it brings you down to the lake. I spent over five hours there today with my dog met another Dog couple boats out on the water nobody was there and it was perfect. I have two more days in South Dakota and I think one more day is gonna be spent at Okobojo recreation area. There is a fee to get in. I didn’t know what to expect so I grabbed the envelope filled it out, put my money in and I waited, but when I left, I put the envelope in the box because it was Certainly worth the money that I had to pay I think it’s $10 for a Resident 15 if you’re from out of state. For five hours of beautiful sand and water, peaceful surroundings yes and yes again

Beautiful hidden beach area. No specific spot designated for swimming, so you'll see people bring their dogs.

When I go to heaven, it'll look just like Okabojo. From swimming in the clear, shallow water to camping and watching a sunset... I don't think you can beat it.
