Old Corundum Millsite Campground

Overview

Old Corundum Millsite Campground offers a unique blend of history and mountain serenity in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Established on the grounds of a historic corundum mine, this park provides a peaceful retreat along the banks of the Cullasaja River. It is a family-owned destination where travelers can escape the noise of modern life and reconnect with the natural beauty of Western North Carolina. The park balances a rustic atmosphere with the essential comforts needed for a relaxing mountain stay.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just outside Franklin, North Carolina, the campground is surrounded by lush forest and the rushing waters of the Cullasaja River. The elevation provides cool mountain air even in the height of summer, making it a popular choice for seasonal visitors. Travelers will find themselves nestled in a valley that feels secluded yet remains easily accessible from Highway 64. The surrounding landscape is defined by cascading waterfalls and dense hardwood forests that showcase vibrant colors throughout the autumn months.

Amenities & Park Features

While the park leans toward a natural experience, it provides reliable infrastructure for modern RVs. Guests have access to full-hookup sites equipped with 30 or 50-amp electricity, water, and sewer connections. For those who need to stay connected, the park offers cable TV and wireless internet access. On-site facilities include a clean bathhouse and laundry equipment to accommodate longer stays. The highlight of the property is the riverfront access, allowing guests to enjoy fishing or simply relaxing by the water’s edge in a shaded, gravel-base site.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Franklin is known as the Gem Capital of the World, and visitors are just minutes away from numerous gem mining opportunities where they can sift for rubies and sapphires. The nearby Cullasaja Gorge offers a scenic drive featuring spectacular stops like Dry Falls and Bridal Veil Falls. Hiking enthusiasts can easily access segments of the Appalachian Trail or the Bartram Trail. Downtown Franklin provides a charming mix of local breweries, museums, and traditional Appalachian eateries, ensuring there is plenty to explore.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is an ideal choice for nature lovers and trout fishers who prioritize a quiet environment over high-energy resort activities. It is well-suited for retirees seeking a seasonal home base and families looking for a traditional camping experience centered around the river. Those who appreciate Appalachian history will find the site’s mining heritage particularly fascinating. It is best for travelers with mid-sized rigs who enjoy a wooded, authentic mountain setting rather than a paved parking-lot style RV park.

Very small sites. Electric and water hookups. WiFi provided. Kind and attentive people. Most sites seem to be privately owned. Few rental sites. Bathhouse was fairly clean, but severly dated and in need of some fresh paint and maintenance. The bird songs are a constant choir of God's nature. Beautiful.

The Old Corundum Millsite Campground,,, what a wonderful experience. Pat Murphy was the perfect host/owner. The RV hook-up was flawless, the neighbors were friendly, the river was clean with many fishing. The bathroom/showers are spotless, limitless hot water. Just what's needed after long day.

Pat was very helpful from taking our reservation request to helping us out with local info. The park is on the rustic side... just like we like it. Some complain about the regulars but you won't find a nicer group of folks. We really liked our stay and are thinking of Franklin area for possible retirement locale. Thanks Pat.
