Old Cranks Campground & RV Park

Overview

Old Cranks Campground & RV Park offers a unique blend of vintage charm and modern convenience in the heart of Galax. This isn't your typical roadside stop; it is an extension of the Old Cranks Museum, which showcases a fascinating collection of antique engines and memorabilia. Travelers often appreciate the quiet atmosphere and the personalized touch provided by the family-operated management. It serves as an ideal base for exploring the musical heritage and natural beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just blocks from the historic downtown district, the park provides a rare urban camping experience with easy access to local culture. Galax is widely known as the World's Capital of Old-Time Mountain Music, and the campground places you right in the center of this vibrant scene. The surroundings are characterized by the rolling hills of southwest Virginia, with the New River Trail State Park located nearby, offering miles of scenic vistas and outdoor recreation opportunities.

Amenities & Park Features

The facility is designed to accommodate a variety of rigs with full hookup sites that include water, sewer, and both 30 and 50-amp electrical service. Guests can enjoy functional amenities such as a clean bathhouse and on-site laundry facilities to make long-term stays more comfortable. The sites are generally level with gravel pads, and the park offers reliable Wi-Fi for those who need to stay connected. The highlight for many is the proximity to the museum, which guests are encouraged to explore during their visit.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to do with the Blue Ridge Parkway just a short drive away, offering world-class scenic drives and hiking. In town, you can visit the historic Rex Theater for live performances or explore the local artisan shops at the Chestnut Creek School of the Arts. For cyclists and hikers, the New River Trail provides a 57-mile linear park along an abandoned railroad bed. The area is particularly lively during the Old Fiddlers Convention, making the park a sought-after location.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an excellent choice for history buffs and antique enthusiasts who will appreciate the unique museum setting. It is also ideal for active retirees or couples looking for a convenient, no-frills home base that allows them to walk into town for dinner or music. Because of its location near major trailheads and the parkway, it attracts travelers who prioritize access to outdoor activities and cultural events over resort-style amenities like swimming pools or large playgrounds.

Great camping spot for the night. Flush toilets. Showers (free). Creek. Inexpensive. Pay Envelope. I didn't even mind that across the creek was a road.

Quiet. No amenities other than 50/30amp hookup sewer and water. Great place if you don’t need much!

No check in, no check out, no visitor fee, no pool no playground, no parties. Just a convenient place to camp where trust and the honor system is how you pay! Easy, pull in sites with water and sewer.

Easy access, level sites large pull thru sites. We stayed with 40 ft motorhome pulling 16 ft trailer. Nice campground $33 a night. Will definitely stay again.
