Ole Bull

Overview

Ole Bull State Park is a 132-acre gem tucked away in the deep Kettle Creek Valley of Potter County. Named after the legendary Norwegian violinist Ole Bornemann Bull, who once sought to build a New Norway in these woods, the park is steeped in unique history. Today, it serves as a serene retreat within the Pennsylvania Wilds, offering RVers a chance to camp in a landscape that remains largely unchanged since the 19th century.

Location & Surroundings

Located in the village of Cross Fork, PA, the park is deeply integrated into the Susquehannock State Forest. The surrounding terrain is characterized by steep mountains and lush valleys, providing a dramatic backdrop for your stay. Because it is situated in one of the most remote sections of the state, visitors can expect exceptionally clear night skies and a quiet environment that is free from the sounds of modern industry or traffic.

Amenities & Park Features

The park features two distinct campgrounds that cater to different preferences. Campground Area 1 provides 30-amp electric hookups at many of its sites, making it the preferred choice for most RV travelers. The facility includes a convenient dump station and modern bathhouses with hot showers. While you won't find luxury resort amenities here, the park offers well-maintained level pads and a peaceful atmosphere that focuses on the beauty of the great outdoors.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Visitors spend much of their time at Kettle Creek, a premier destination for fly fishing and seasonal swimming. The park is a gateway to the Susquehannock Trail System, an 85-mile loop that is a favorite for dedicated hikers and backpackers. Additionally, a short hike leads to the historic stone foundations of Ole Bull’s castle, offering a panoramic view of the valley and a glimpse into the region's fascinating cultural past.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for adventurous RVers who prioritize natural beauty and historical significance over high-speed connectivity. It is a haven for avid anglers and stargazers looking for some of the darkest skies on the East Coast. If your travel style involves disconnecting from digital distractions to focus on mountain air and forest trails, this park will provide the perfect sanctuary for your next Pennsylvania road trip.

We've been to Ole Bull for a number of years and it has yet to get boring. The facilities are always well kept (especially the bathrooms/shower house!). The true shining stars are the staff. The educational programs & the dedicated staff that deliver them. One shining star is Ranger Brian, who this year we saw a couple different times at a couple different parks. His delivery of wild edible plants and his night sky demo are top notch! He is knowledgeable and loves to chat with both the kids & adult campers.

Stayed at the group site. There view of the sky wasn't as good as at Cherry Springs but wasn't crowded, didn't have to worry about having a red filter on all your lights etc. We still had a great view of they sky and saw a lot until the moon cone up and washed out all but the brightest stars.

We had a great July 4th weekend camping at Ole Bull State Park, even though it was the first time camping for most of us. The park had plenty of nature trails around and had good amenities and todos like electricity, public bathroom with shower, a small beach for kids, swimming area, and creeks for fishing.

Had a great trip. The surroundings were beautiful, the staff were super kind and helpful. The hot showers in the bathhouse were a great way to end a 3 mile hike as well! Site is serene and very quiet at night; able to have a sense of privacy while still being in a community setting. Will 100% be coming back!

We stayed at the Lodge in September. The leaves were just starting to turn colors. It's a beautiful cabin/log house, very clean. The kitchen is stocked with everything you would need as far as utensils, cookware, and dishes. The rest of the lodge is comfortable. The area around the lodge is fenced off and has its own swings set and horseshoe pits. Lots of room for other outdoor games. The area itself is quiet and fairly remote. It is a great place to get away.
