Ottawa/Bob Lake
Overview
Located deep within the Ottawa National Forest, the Ottawa/Bob Lake Campground offers a quintessential Upper Peninsula experience. This rustic destination is managed by the USDA Forest Service and provides a tranquil escape from the noise of modern life. Visitors here trade paved lots for shaded forest sites and immediate access to the clear waters of Bob Lake. It is an ideal spot for those who appreciate a slower pace and the natural beauty of Michigan’s wilderness.
Location & Surroundings
This campground is situated near Nisula, MI, providing a remote setting surrounded by miles of dense hardwoods and conifers. The geography is defined by the rolling terrain of the western Upper Peninsula, where the air is crisp and the nights are incredibly dark. Bob Lake itself is the centerpiece, a 511-acre body of water known for its sandy shoreline and peaceful atmosphere, making the surroundings feel like a private sanctuary hidden away from major highways.
Amenities & Park Features
As a forest service site, the amenities at Bob Lake focus on basic necessities rather than luxury. The facility provides several core features for campers:
- Vault toilets located conveniently near the campsites.
- A hand-action pump for potable well water access.
- A gravel boat launch suitable for small to medium watercraft.
- Individual sites featuring fire rings and picnic tables.
There are no electric or sewer hookups available, making this a prime location for dry camping. RVers should arrive with full fresh water tanks and prepared for a self-sufficient stay.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor recreation is the primary draw, with fishing for walleye and northern pike being a popular pastime for residents. The lake features a designated swimming area with a sandy beach that is perfect for families during the summer months. Beyond the water, the Ottawa National Forest offers endless miles of hiking and wildlife viewing opportunities. For those willing to drive, the shores of Lake Superior and the rugged Porcupine Mountains are accessible for day-long excursions.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is best suited for self-sufficient RVers who enjoy boondocking and do not require modern hookups. It is a fantastic choice for anglers and paddlers who want to be steps away from a boat ramp. If you are looking for a rugged outdoor experience where the focus is on campfire cooking and stargazing rather than Wi-Fi connectivity, Bob Lake provides the perfect back-to-basics environment for your next Michigan adventure.

Most excellent National Forest experience, quiet, clean, good privacy. Super bird watching, including loons, bald eagles, Osprey, and owls. Lots of hiking and waterfalls, of course, near by.

If it wasnt for the group of people that came in at 2am, blasting music, and partying until 5am...2 nights in a row I would rave about Bob Lake Campground. I have learned to bring my own weed whacker to clean up the site as most are not mowed very well. On the plus side this place is remote, no cell service, quite most of the time, and very few campers. Bug are always an issue here but just go prepared.

Excellent rustic campground with well water and pit toilets. Half the sites are lakefront and mine had direct access via sandy bottom beach. Bugs were awful, but it was July 5th so that’s expected. Only caught one catfish all weekend, and didn’t see anyone else pull anything out.

Absolutely beautiful! We wanted primitive and that is exactly what we got. We had the entire campground to ourselves except the first night. There are several sites on the lake and several sites just beyond. No showers but the bathrooms are clean. It has a swimming beach and boat ramp. The hike on Beaver Lodge trail was awesome besides the mosquitoes we had no complaints and were completely satisfied. There is a majestic pair of eagles and a swan plus a Loon that we loved hearing! The Chipmunks were adorable to watch ❤️😂 definitely going back the first chance we get!!

Been coming here every chance I get for the last 6 years. It's an amazing campground with little to no people to deal with (at least the times I've been.) Everytime I'm here I find more to love about it. The weather the foliage and the wild life. I've seen black bear, deer and a Bald Eagle throughout the years of visiting thos campground. There's also a cool hiking trail down the road a bit Beaver Lodge Trail its a good moderate 1mile ish hike round trip with fantastic views of all sorts of nature.
