Ottawa/Lake Sainte Kathryn

Overview

Ottawa/Lake Sainte Kathryn is a secluded getaway nestled within the sprawling Ottawa National Forest in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. This primitive campground sits on the northern shore of Lake Sainte Kathryn, offering a quiet retreat for those looking to escape the hustle of modern life. With approximately 25 campsites, the park maintains a peaceful atmosphere where the sounds of the forest and the call of loons dominate the environment. It is an ideal spot for visitors who value natural beauty and a true wilderness experience over commercial luxury.

Location & Surroundings

Located just south of Sidnaw, MI, the park is surrounded by a diverse landscape of hardwoods and pines. The primary draw is the 80-acre lake, which provides a stunning backdrop for many of the campsites. The terrain is relatively flat and provides easy access to the Deer Marsh Interpretive Trail, a loop that showcases the unique ecosystem of the Upper Peninsula. This remote location ensures dark skies for incredible stargazing and a deep sense of isolation from the noise of city life.

Amenities & Park Features

As a traditional forest service facility, the amenities here are focused on the essentials of outdoor living. The park provides vault toilets and pressurized water via a hand pump rather than modern hookups. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring for traditional evening campfires. For those bringing watercraft, there is a convenient boat ramp available for launching small fishing boats, kayaks, or canoes. Travelers should note that this is a pack-in, pack-out facility, requiring guests to manage their own refuse.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the heart of the experience here, with fishing for walleye, northern pike, and bass being a favorite pastime for visitors. The nearby Deer Marsh Trail offers excellent opportunities for hiking, nature study, and wildlife photography. A short drive through the forest allows travelers to explore the majestic Bond Falls or venture to other nearby lakes within the federal forest system. The area is also highly regarded for birdwatching, particularly for spotting nesting loons and various forest-dwelling species.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is best suited for self-contained RVers and tent campers who enjoy a primitive, rustic experience. Because there are no electric, water, or sewer hookups, it is perfect for those equipped for dry camping or boondocking. It is an excellent choice for anglers and hikers who want direct access to the water and scenic trails. If you are looking for a quiet, unplugged vacation where nature is the main attraction, this Michigan destination is a perfect fit.

Camp host is awesome but grounds and maintenance have been neglected by other staff. Also, the rocks placed by the entrances of the campsites are placed ridiculously close and make it difficult to get in without damaging your vehicle and are nearly impossible to back into at night as you can see nothing... No reflectors, nothing. I damaged my vehicle on them, as well as one other camper I spoke with while I was there. I did report it to the ranger who visited, as well as the sites vendor. Why have these not been moved? They are clearly a safety issue. My solar generator was also stolen from my campsite

A nice area to camp at in the Ottawa National Forest. The lake is alright for paddling on. Usually not too busy. It's not as wild as other lakes around the area but is still worth a trip. Be sure to check out the wetland hiking trail nearby!

We've been going to this campground for years. It's very primitive, no hookups or showers .. just regular old outhouses...and I love it. Peaceful and quiet, beautiful lake, beautiful nature. You won't get cell service here so only come if you're wanting to enjoy some time off the grid. Nice place to fish or just take a pleasant canoe/kayak ride. Sit by the lake with your coffee in the morning and listen to the loons. ❤️

Lots of garbage and rubbish laying around, a tire laying at the boat launch... I'm sure Waste management raising their prices 900% might be the reason, flipping shame, going to hurt the beautiful U.P.
