Otter Lake Recreation Area (Lincoln County Park)

Overview

Otter Lake Recreation Area, situated in the heart of Lincoln County, offers a quintessential Wisconsin Northwoods experience. This county-run park provides a peaceful retreat for those looking to escape the bustle of more commercial campgrounds. Spanning roughly 45 acres of land surrounding the pristine 65-acre Otter Lake, the park is known for its heavily wooded sites and natural beauty. It is an ideal spot for travelers who value quiet evenings, starlit skies, and a direct connection to the lush Wisconsin outdoors.

Location & Surroundings

Located just a short drive southeast of Tomahawk, Wisconsin, the park is tucked away in a scenic area dominated by dense hardwood forests and sparkling glacial lakes. The drive to the campground takes visitors through winding rural roads that showcase the rugged, untouched beauty of the region. Being part of the Lincoln County forest system, the surrounding landscape is vibrant, particularly during the autumn months when the forest canopy transforms into a brilliant mosaic of reds, oranges, and golds.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground features 26 well-spaced sites, with many offering 30-amp electric hookups to accommodate modern RVs, while others remain primitive for a traditional feel. While the park maintains a rustic charm, it includes essential facilities to support your stay. Each site is equipped with a sturdy fire ring and picnic table for outdoor meals. The park also provides a well-maintained boat launch and a small playground, making it highly functional for families who enjoy self-contained camping. Guests have access to vault toilets and hand-pumped well water throughout the season.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Water-based recreation is the primary draw here, with Otter Lake being a local favorite for panfishing and kayaking in calm waters. Beyond the park boundaries, visitors can explore the extensive Underdown Recreation Area, which offers miles of challenging trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. The nearby town of Tomahawk provides charming local dining and seasonal festivals, while the Wisconsin River offers additional opportunities for boating and scenic sightseeing just a few miles from the park gates.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is a perfect match for nature enthusiasts and RVers who prefer a quiet, low-frills environment over a busy commercial resort. It is best suited for those with smaller to mid-sized rigs who enjoy boating and fishing right from their home base. If you are looking for a place to disconnect from the digital world and immerse yourself in the profound stillness of the Northwoods, this hidden gem in Lincoln County is an excellent destination for your next trip.

Beautiful trail around the lake. Beach is the same as it was in the 70's. Yes, that's good. Camping is still only $20.00/night. No water or electric, but still has an old hand-pump spigot. Endless small panfish from shore for all of the kids and kids at heart.

Great place to be out in the woods, away from the city and peaceful with mother nature. Fishing not the greatest tho. Looks very good tho.

Super busy whenever we camped in late July, but overall nice secluded woods if you can manage a spot away from others. Definitely bring bug spray, mosquitos are terrible.
