Oxbow (Olmstead County Park)
Overview
Oxbow Park, located just outside of Byron, Minnesota, offers a unique blend of natural beauty and educational experiences. Managed by Olmsted County, this sprawling 624-acre park is far more than just a place to park your rig; it is a destination centered around the Zollman Zoo and the scenic South Branch of the Zumbro River. RVers will find a peaceful atmosphere where the sounds of native wildlife replace the hum of highway traffic. The park is well-regarded for its commitment to conservation and providing a space where families can connect with the native landscape of the Midwest. It is a quiet retreat that prioritizes the natural environment over commercial frills.
Location & Surroundings
Situated in the rolling hills of southeastern Minnesota, Oxbow Park provides a serene escape while remaining conveniently close to the city of Rochester. The park is nestled within the Zumbro River Valley, characterized by steep bluffs, hardwood forests, and lush prairie lands. Its location in Byron makes it an ideal stop for those traveling through the region who want to avoid the congestion of urban centers without sacrificing accessibility. The surrounding area is dotted with agricultural fields and small-town charm, creating a quiet backdrop for a relaxing outdoor getaway. The park’s isolated feel makes it hard to believe you are only minutes away from modern city services.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground at Oxbow Park caters to various camping styles, offering both primitive sites and electric hookups for RV travelers. While the sites provide a rustic feel, visitors have access to modern conveniences including a dump station and pressurized water fills. The park features well-maintained restrooms and shower facilities to ensure comfort during your stay. Beyond the campsites, the park boasts over eight miles of hiking trails, multiple picnic shelters, and four distinct playground areas, making it easy to spend the entire day exploring the grounds. The integrated trail system allows campers to transition easily from their site to the deep woods or riverbank.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw for many visitors is the Zollman Zoo, which houses over 30 species of native Minnesota animals, including bison, wolves, and black bears. The zoo focuses on injured or orphaned animals that cannot be released into the wild. For those looking to explore beyond the park, the nearby city of Rochester offers the world-renowned Mayo Clinic and a vibrant downtown scene. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy fishing and canoeing on the Zumbro River or visit the nearby Douglas State Trail for miles of paved biking and walking paths that connect several small communities. The Nature Center also provides rotating exhibits that explain the local geology and ecology.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an excellent choice for family-oriented travelers and nature lovers who prioritize educational opportunities and quiet surroundings. Because the campground is part of a larger county park and zoo, it is particularly well-suited for those traveling with children who will appreciate the animal exhibits and playgrounds. It is also ideal for birdwatchers and hikers looking for a network of trails through diverse ecosystems. While it lacks the high-end luxury amenities of a commercial resort, its rustic charm and focus on the natural world make it a standout choice for those seeking a genuine Minnesota outdoor experience in a peaceful setting.

This location is such a short drive from Rochester! The animals are well cared for and several you can pet or get very close up views. We spent about an hour and half just walking though and looking at the animals and visiting the visiting center.

Friendly staff, great atmosphere and wonderful way to spend an afternoon with your kids. Definitely worth the visit and the charitable donation to help them out!

My family loves this place. It's free to visit with a donation location inside of the building. Clean bathrooms! They have a lot of animals that are native to Minnesota. You can learn about different things inside the center as well. There are walking trails and even a campsite right off the park, which is super cool. We come here any time we have to go into Rochester for doctors' appointments because it's very close, just right by Byron.

This quaint zoo, nature center, and park located in Byron, Minnesota, is quite impressive and free. They do accept donations with no pressure. There are many animals that are naturally from Minnesota. At the nature center, they have an address book to sign. They also sell bluebird house kits for $10 to make your own bird house with complete instructions and wood pieces and nails included. They also have great hiking trails. There are butterflies, birds, and natural wildflowers to enjoy.
