Ozark Lake - COE/Aux Arc

Overview

Aux Arc Park, managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, sits on the north bank of the Arkansas River in the shadows of the Ozark Mountains. This park offers a peaceful getaway with over 80 campsites, many of which overlook the tranquil waters of Ozark Lake. It is a prime example of the high-quality, nature-focused camping experiences provided by the COE, emphasizing scenic beauty and outdoor recreation. Travelers often visit for the expansive river views and the chance to relax in a clean, well-managed environment that highlights the natural beauty of the region.

Location & Surroundings

Located just outside the charming town of Ozark, AR, the park provides easy access from Interstate 40 while feeling worlds away from the highway noise. The landscape is defined by the Arkansas River valley, with rolling hills and lush forests surrounding the campground. The proximity to the Ozark Lock and Dam adds an interesting industrial-natural contrast, as visitors can watch barges and boats navigate the river system. This location serves as a perfect gateway to both the river and the nearby mountain ranges.

Amenities & Park Features

The park is well-equipped for modern RVers, featuring electric and water hookups at most sites, including 30 and 50-amp options. Facilities include multiple bathhouses with hot showers, a dump station, and a playground for children. Boaters will appreciate the paved boat ramp, providing direct access to the river for fishing or cruising. The sites are generally spacious and level, with many offering concrete pads and picnic tables that simplify the setup process for larger rigs and families.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Fishing is the primary draw here, with the river teeming with bass, catfish, and crappie. Beyond the water, visitors are a short drive from the Ozark-St. Francis National Forest, which offers endless hiking and mountain biking trails. For a taste of local culture, the town of Ozark features historic architecture and local eateries. Additionally, the Mulberry River is nearby, providing excellent opportunities for canoeing and kayaking during the spring season for those seeking a bit more adventure.

Who This Park Is Best For

Aux Arc is ideal for nature lovers and anglers who prefer a quiet, scenic atmosphere over the bustling amenities of a commercial resort. It is a fantastic choice for mid-sized to large RVs looking for a reliable and affordable stopover or a long-term base for exploring the Ozarks. Families will enjoy the safe, open spaces, while bird watchers and photographers will find plenty of inspiration in the diverse local wildlife and the stunning river sunsets.

Great place to camp on Arkansas River. Easy to go to stores and multiple eating places near by. And we got to watch the Pelicans. Nice large spots. We have a 40 ft 5th wheel with multiple slides.

Although very busy this Labor Day weekend, it is very quiet and peaceful on the river. Campsites are spaced out nicely!

Very pretty location along the Arkansas River across from the Butterball factory!🦃🍗 Mile long trains and barges as long as cruise ships. Interesting sites. 👀 And nearby wineries in Altus.🍷 This campground has several unique site options. You can choose a "V" site if you're camping with friends, so they can be on their own site but it's right next to you. There's a tremendous distance between the other campsites. Enough that they could have put campsites in between, but it's nice that they didn't. 😀 Other sites are single, and they back up to the forest or the water. Some have tremendously long driveways. But for the most part if you bring a lawn mower you get a big yard! 😉 There's plenty of room for big rigs. Some have covered aluminum tables, and some do not. They all seem to be pretty level. Everybody is on one road which dead ends at the boat ramp. Although there is another section to the park, section c, which is on the other side of the dam. It has its own bath house, two pavilions, a playground and swing set! And a bridge that will take you to the shore on the downstream side of the dam and you can fish🎣 Very quiet location.🤫 Except for the occasional train or boat. I was here for 4 days through a weekend and only once did I hear a train late at night.🚆 There doesn't appear to be any access to the dam from this location. I saw a road that went there from the other side of the river after I passed the butterball factory. That seems to be where the lock is. I don't know if there is public access?

We have camped here for several years and the last couple yrs the campgrounds haven’t been kept up. The grass is knee high on a holiday weekend. You can’t get down to the banks of the river because the brush is so high. The attendants said it’s supposed to be mowed every two weeks but looks like it hasn’t been mowed in 5-6 weeks if that. Come on please keep it mowed it used to be so beautiful…what happened!?
