Ozark Scenic Riverway/Alley Spring

Overview

Alley Spring serves as a centerpiece of the Ozark National Scenic Riverways, a protected corridor of pristine water and wilderness. It features the iconic Old Red Mill and a massive natural spring discharging millions of gallons of cool, clear water daily. This NPS-managed site provides a serene backdrop for RVers seeking a connection with Missouri's natural heritage rather than a bustling commercial resort. It offers a perfect balance of early 20th-century history and raw outdoor beauty in a quiet, forested setting.

Location & Surroundings

Nestled along the Jacks Fork River near the town of Eminence, the terrain is defined by rugged limestone bluffs and dense hardwood forests. The spring itself creates a stunning turquoise pool that stays a constant temperature year-round, flowing into the river nearby. RVers will find themselves immersed in a deep valley where the sound of flowing water and the sight of the historic mill dominate the landscape, providing a deep sense of tranquility and a true escape from the modern world.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground provides well-spaced sites that can accommodate a range of RV sizes. While the experience is more rustic than a private park, it offers essential features for a comfortable stay:

  • Electric hookups available at many sites to power your rig.
  • Centralized water fill stations and a sanitary dump station for convenience.
  • Modern restrooms and hot shower facilities maintained by the National Park Service.

The layout is thoughtfully designed to preserve the natural tree canopy, providing ample shade and privacy for visitors during the warm Missouri summers.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Beyond the spring itself, the area is a premier destination for water enthusiasts. Floating the Jacks Fork and Current Rivers via canoe, kayak, or tube is a quintessential Missouri activity. Hikers can explore the Alley Spring Overlook Trail for panoramic views of the spring branch or visit the nearby Rocky Falls for a natural water slide experience. The town of Eminence offers local dining and artisan shops just a short drive away, making it easy to experience small-town Ozark culture between river excursions.

Who This Park Is Best For

This location is ideal for travelers who prioritize nature and history over modern resort-style amenities like swimming pools or high-speed Wi-Fi. It is perfect for families wanting to teach children about karst geology and pioneer history, as well as photographers looking to capture the scenic red mill at sunrise. If you enjoy a quiet evening by a campfire under a dark sky and days spent on the river, this park is your perfect Missouri destination.

Absolutely beautiful! A must see if you're near Eminence. We stayed at Echo Bluff State Park and the drive from there was only 30 minutes. The water is a brilliant blue, and the contrast of the red mill is truly picturesque. My photos don't do it justice in how vivid the colors are. Inside the mill, a park ranger was glad to give us a brief summary of its history, and there are plenty of informational plaques beside the old machinery. You can even go upstairs and see more of the inner workings, but unfortunately the basement and attic are off limits. There's a short 0.3 mile walking trail around the spring that's worth the few minutes walk if you're able. It was a little muddy in just a few places since it had rained the day before, but nothing too rugged. There's also a longer 1.5 mile trail that we didn't take on this visit, but will definitely be on the list for next time!

Very nice place to check out, there were only a couple people there when we came and it is just so pretty. So many photo opportunities and things to explore. Very easy to drive to, nice big parking lot, paved walking path up to the bridge to the mill area.

A beautiful hidden gem. The water was a brilliant blue to emerald green depending on the light play. Worth the drive.

Beautiful historical mill. Very well maintained in a pristine setting. Pictures don’t accurately capture the calming beauty. A must visit in Missouri. Enjoy the drive too.
