Paarens Beach Park
Overview
Paarens Beach Park offers a serene lakeside escape on the southern shores of Stuart Lake. As one of the more tranquil provincial parks in the region, it provides a rustic camping experience that emphasizes the natural beauty of the British Columbia interior. Travelers visiting this park can expect a classic outdoor atmosphere where the sound of the water and the wind through the trees define the stay. It is an ideal spot for those looking to disconnect and enjoy a peaceful forest setting.
Location & Surroundings
Located just 15 kilometers from the historic community of Fort St. James, the park sits within a lush forest of Douglas fir and aspen. The primary draw is the expansive sandy beach, which is a notable and rare feature in northern British Columbia. The view across Stuart Lake is spectacular, offering glimpses of distant mountains and crystal-clear water. This setting provides a sense of isolation without being far from local services, making it a convenient yet secluded destination.
Amenities & Park Features
This is a rustic facility, so RVers should arrive prepared for a dry camping experience. The park features several vehicle-accessible campsites nestled in the trees for maximum privacy. Essential amenities include:
- Pit toilets and a hand pump for water
- A concrete boat launch for easy lake access
- Individual fire rings and picnic tables at each site
While there are no electrical or water hookups available, the park's spacious layouts can accommodate various rig sizes, provided the vehicles are self-contained. It is a true back-to-basics destination focused on the outdoor environment.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The most popular activity is spending time on the water, whether it is paddling, fishing for trout, or swimming in the designated beach areas. A short drive leads to the Fort St. James National Historic Site, where visitors can explore the 1890s fur trade era through restored buildings and live demonstrations. Hikers can also tackle the trails on nearby Mount Pope for panoramic views of the entire lake system, offering a great way to experience the local geography and wildlife.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is a perfect match for self-contained RVers who value natural scenery and quiet over resort-style luxury. Families will particularly enjoy the shallow swimming areas and sandy beach, which are excellent for children to play safely. It is also an ideal choice for boating enthusiasts and anglers who want immediate access to one of the largest natural lakes in the province. If you appreciate a simple, nature-focused stay, this park fits your travel style.

This place is amazing!!! Beautiful beach, nice camp sites, huge new playground! The caretakers really show their love to the sites. The picnic tables are painted, and the sites are raked! I would love to come and stay here again! We walked down the beach a long way and the locals were very friendly.
