Pachaug/Green Falls Campground
Overview
Located within the expansive Pachaug State Forest, Green Falls Campground offers a secluded escape into the Connecticut woods. This facility is part of the largest state forest in Connecticut, providing a tranquil environment defined by glacial boulders and dense white pine stands. Unlike modern resorts, this state-run site focuses on the simplicity of the outdoors, offering a quiet retreat for those looking to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with nature in its most authentic form.
Location & Surroundings
Situated in the town of Voluntown, the campground is tucked away in the eastern portion of the state near the Rhode Island border. The terrain is characterized by the Mount Misery Area and the serene Green Falls Pond. The surrounding landscape features rugged trails and unique geological formations, making it feel far removed from the hustle of coastal Connecticut. Traveling into the park requires navigating unpaved gravel roads, which adds to the remote and rustic atmosphere of the location.
Amenities & Park Features
This is a primitive camping area, meaning visitors should arrive prepared for a dry-camping experience. There are no utility hookups available for RVs, making it an ideal spot for self-contained units that don't mind living off-grid. On-site amenities are limited to picnic tables, fire rings, and vault toilets. Water is accessible via hand pumps located throughout the grounds. The lack of electricity and modern plumbing ensures a quiet stay where the sound of the wind through the trees remains the primary soundtrack for your visit.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The highlight of the area is the pond, which is a popular spot for swimming, fishing, and launching kayaks or canoes. Hikers will appreciate the proximity to the Narragansett Trail, which winds through the forest and offers views of interesting rock outcroppings and deep ravines. For those interested in local history, the nearby Rhodes Pond and various remnants of early industrial sites provide a glimpse into the region's past while exploring the extensive and well-maintained trail network.
Who This Park Is Best For
Green Falls is best suited for adventurous RVers with smaller rigs or camper vans who prefer a rugged, back-to-basics experience. Due to the narrow access roads and lack of pull-through sites, it is not recommended for large motorhomes or heavy fifth wheels. It is the perfect destination for nature enthusiasts and hikers who prioritize direct access to trails and water over luxury amenities. If you value privacy and a genuine forest setting, this campground is a premier choice.

Came on a quiet rainy weekend, was fantastic! Some of the sites are a bit close to others but there wasnt anyone in the sites near me so it was super quiet and secluded. There are no grates on the firepits, so keep that in mind when packing food. The bathrooms are the best kept compost bathrooms Ive ever seen. There is a pond right nearby and a nice hike around it. Not sure how it is on a crowded weekend, but was perfect for me on a quiet weekend.

Every year my daughter has my granddaughter‘s birthday parties there and they do a three or four day camping trip right next to the pond and everyone has such a great time. It’s great because some of my granddaughter‘s friends and their families also spend the night camping, so it is a great memory for all. I’m hoping I can find some pictures from last year, but I believe I already did a photo dump and had them made into photos for their albums. Never had a problem here it’s always clean and I love that the swim area is roped off, so the kids know exactly how far they can go.

Awesome campground. All the tent sites seem to be really good. We stayed in site 14 which is very close to bathrooms and was convenient for that reason, but also you can catch a whiff here and there, didn’t bother us much tho. The pond was great. There’s a small roped off swimming area. Kayaking/canoeing allowed with a small boat launch. Quick ride (10-15 mins) into town to resupply at the gas station/market on rt 138. There’s a dunkin as well for a quick pick me up. Fun in the sun and rain. Will absolutely be returning. Very clean. DEEP staff and rangers do their rounds every once in a while. There is no access to drinking water, only non potable water. No showers. Firewood available off site. Would highly recommend.

Great camping location with spacious campsites (we fit a 4-person tent, a 3-person tent, and a small 2-person tent and 2 mid-size cars easily). We had site 6 which was up a driveway and a nice quiet site with a picnic table and a stone fire pit. There is a 6 person and 2 car limit. To protect the trees, you can’t hang anything from them, so hammocking and tarp installation weren’t possible. The pond is close by and the water is beautiful and clean. There is just a small designated swimming area that is a perfect depth. There’s no running water on site but more than enough well-maintained composting toilets. To check in, the ranger came by and got our names and license plates. We didn’t see a camp store or office so bringing your own firewood is helpful (we got some from a friendly neighbor!) Overall, I recommend this as a pet-friendly camping site with access to nice swimming!

Beautiful spot. Very peaceful and quiet. If you’re going camping make sure to bring your own water and firewood and fire camp grill if you’re cooking on the fire. Other then that it’s a unique spot!!
