Paddy's Flat Campground
Overview
Paddy's Flat Campground offers a serene escape into the heart of Kananaskis Country. Managed within the Elbow River Provincial Recreation Area, this site is characterized by its lush forested landscape and immediate access to the flowing waters of the Elbow River. It provides a traditional camping experience that favors the sounds of nature and the rustle of pine needles over modern luxuries, making it a staple for Alberta adventurers seeking a peaceful mountain retreat.
Location & Surroundings
Situated just a short drive from the charming hamlet of Bragg Creek, the campground is nestled deep within the Elbow River valley. The surrounding terrain is a magnificent mix of dense evergreen forests and rugged rocky riverbanks. This location offers a true sense of mountain wilderness while remaining conveniently accessible from Calgary. Visitors will appreciate the scenic mountain vistas and the refreshing, crisp alpine air that defines this beautiful region of the Canadian Rockies.
Amenities & Park Features
This is a rustic destination featuring 98 well-spaced unserviced sites suited for both tents and smaller RVs. While there are no power or water hookups at the individual sites, the park provides essential facilities to ensure a comfortable stay:
- Vault toilets maintained regularly and located throughout the loops.
- Hand-pumped water stations available for basic cleaning and utility.
- Large fire pits and heavy-duty picnic tables at every site.
The campground is organized into several distinct loops, many of which offer significant privacy due to the mature tree cover and natural topography.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts can easily explore the majestic Elbow Falls, a stunning natural landmark located just a few minutes up the road. The area serves as a premier hub for recreation, offering an extensive network of hiking and mountain biking trails that wind through the foothills and higher elevations. Anglers frequently visit the riverbanks for catch-and-release trout fishing, and the interpretive trails nearby offer educational walks for families and nature lovers wanting to learn about the local ecosystem.
Who This Park Is Best For
Paddy's Flat is an ideal choice for travelers who prefer authentic dry camping and a tranquil, nature-focused environment. It is best suited for small to mid-sized RVs, truck campers, or campervans that do not require full hookups to operate. Families and solo adventurers looking to completely unplug from technology will find the lack of cell service and the abundance of riverside trails an incredible combination for a restorative mountain getaway.

Stayed in D58. It was a nice spot but pretty high up if you plan take the trail to the river. Close washrooms and pretty quiet place after 11pm. Lots of RV'S. 5min drive to Elbow Falls.

This is one of my favourite campgrounds close to Calgary! With a 40 minute drive, it is easy to get to but also totally worth it! Lots of hiking trails, it’s right by the elbow river, and there are many water pumps around camp.

Beautiful!!! 5 min drive to hot water showers. Quiet, peaceful, 3 min walk to river. Smell of roses and wonderful caretaker welcome you! First come, first serve, self check-in process.

One of the better first come-first serve campgrounds I've visited around Alberta and Saskatchewan. Close proximity to Calgary (40 min) with easy access to plenty of hiking trails. Don't expect it to have high mountain peaks like Banff/Canmore as it's just before the mountain range starts, but great views nonetheless and much less crowded. Only downside is no free firewood available (bring your own or you can purchase for a ridiculous price). Backs right onto the Elbow river.
