Page Springs (BLM)

Overview

Page Springs Campground offers a peaceful retreat at the base of the majestic Steens Mountain. Managed by the BLM, this high-desert oasis provides a rustic escape for travelers looking to experience the raw beauty of Southeastern Oregon. Situated along the Donner und Blitzen River, the park is characterized by lush riparian vegetation that contrasts beautifully with the surrounding arid landscapes. It serves as an essential basecamp for exploring the rugged wilderness of the Harney Basin.

Location & Surroundings

Located just a few miles from the tiny community of Frenchglen, OR, the park sits at the entrance to the Steens Mountain North Loop Road. The environment is dominated by sprawling sagebrush plains and dramatic basalt rimrock. Because it is positioned near a perennial water source, the campground is a verdant pocket filled with towering cottonwood trees that provide much-needed shade during the warm summer months. The remote location ensures incredibly quiet nights and pristine air quality.

Amenities & Park Features

As a BLM-managed site, Page Springs is best suited for self-contained RVs, as there are no hookups available at the individual sites. The campground features 36 spacious sites with gravel pads, each equipped with a picnic table and a steel fire ring. Visitors have access to vault toilets and potable water, though water availability is seasonal and travelers should check current conditions before arrival. The park does not offer a dump station, so planning ahead for waste management is necessary for longer stays.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find no shortage of activities in this remote corner of Oregon. The Malheur National Wildlife Refuge is just a short drive away, offering world-class birdwatching opportunities during spring and fall migrations. For those who enjoy hiking, the Blitzen River Trail starts right from the campground, winding through scenic canyons and offering views of local wildlife. Driving the Steens Mountain Loop is a must for breathtaking overlooks of the Alvord Desert and massive glacial gorges.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for adventurous dry campers who value solitude and natural scenery over modern luxury amenities. If you are a landscape photographer, avid birder, or dark-sky enthusiast, the lack of light pollution and abundance of wildlife make this a premier destination. It is a perfect fit for RVers who enjoy off-the-beaten-path destinations and want to immerse themselves in the quiet rhythms of the Oregon high desert while exploring one of the state's most unique geological features.

Campsites are all first come, first serve and vary quite a bit on size and privacy. Very clean pit toilets - no smell! Access to nice trail along river. Kiosk allows for credit card payment ($16 per night).

Very quiet campground, about half the campsites have trees for shade. All sizes of sites, with a few that could take longer setups. Couple of nice trails. Good base for exploring the Steens area.

This is a beautiful campground. Sites spaced apart and huge! Close to things to see. We brought all kinds of mosquito repellant for us and our dogs. They were relentless on me and our Jack Russell but my partner and Border Collie were fine. Had to give our Jack Russell some Benidryl her face swelled so bad. Just depends on if they like you or not🤣 Would come back here in the cooler weather to avoid mosquitoes.

We stayed here for three nights in a tent in space 29 along the creek. Most campsites are spacious and well spread out from each other. Lots of deer mornings and evenings. Clean pit toilets, fire pits and picnic tables. One covered picnic shelter that we were very glad was nearby when cooking breakfast one rainy morning.

Great place to camp. There are lots of interesting trails you can take right for the campground. Most sites are well separated and there are many in the shade. There is the river and several little streams coming from the springs - so, yes - there can be mosquitoes. But from my experience, it was not a big deal. I really liked sitting by the stream watching the ducks and birds. The fee now is $16 (8 for seniors) - what a deal! (You can use your credit card now.)
