Paint Lake Park

Overview

Paint Lake Provincial Park stands as a premier destination within Northern Manitoba's wilderness, offering travelers a gateway to the rugged beauty of the boreal forest. This sprawling park is centered around the lake itself, which is renowned for its jagged shoreline and over 60 scattered islands. For RVers, it provides a well-balanced mix of natural isolation and modern convenience, making it one of the most popular provincial parks in the region for those trekking north through the province.

Location & Surroundings

Located approximately 32 kilometers south of Thompson, Manitoba, the park sits firmly within the Precambrian Shield. This translates to a landscape defined by ancient rock outcroppings, dense evergreen forests, and crystal-clear waters. The geography of Paint Lake is unique, featuring a vast network of interconnected waterways that invite exploration by boat. Travelers will find themselves surrounded by the quiet serenity of the north, where the air is crisp and the horizon feels endless under the vast Canadian sky.

Amenities & Park Features

The park caters to diverse camping styles with a variety of site options to ensure a comfortable stay. RV travelers can utilize electrified campsites that accommodate various rig sizes, while a central dump station and modern washrooms are conveniently located. One of the standout features is the largest marina in Manitoba, which provides boat rentals and docking services. On-site, visitors also have access to a licensed restaurant and a convenience store, providing essential supplies and warm meals without needing to drive back to the city.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Water activities dominate the experience here, with world-class fishing for walleye and northern pike drawing anglers from across the continent. Hikers can enjoy the Coffee Cove Trail or explore the many islands by canoe. Just a short drive away, visitors can marvel at Pisew Falls Provincial Park, home to one of the highest accessible waterfalls in Manitoba. In the nearby city of Thompson, the Heritage North Museum offers a deep dive into the local fur trading history and the region's rich mining heritage.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal destination for outdoor enthusiasts and families who want a true northern experience without sacrificing basic comforts. It is perfect for avid anglers looking for their next big catch and RVers who enjoy water-based recreation. If you are seeking a peaceful retreat to witness the Northern Lights or a functional base camp for exploring the northern reaches of Manitoba, Paint Lake Park provides a scenic and reliable home on the road.

I am in paint lake right now been 5 days and love it. Beautiful place and worth the drive, the Marina restaurant has amazing fries!! The campground as very clean showers and bathrooms, it is very quiet. Lots of beaches (including a dog beach) and places for kids to play in, sites are very private which I like. The lakes around here are beautiful to fish and kayak (went to Mid Lake, Paint Lake and Ospwagon Lake). You are 30 min fm Thompson and 40ish min fm Pisew Falls. Right now there is a water advisory but you just need to boil it) which is the only downside so far (which no big deal at all). I went check to Lakeview (5 to 10 min fm Paint Lake campground same park) it has no electricity but you are right on the water if that is what you are looking for.

Beautiful lake with little rock islands. The restrooms are new and spotless clean. dog beach. Lots of picnic areas. Lodge to eat out. Cosy place to hear the birds sing and relax. Many little beaches.

Worth the trip! This Campground is awesome. The views are spectacular (especially during the sunset), the park itself is very nice surrounded by lakes. Just be careful of LEECH. It also has a lot activities like playgrounds and a basketball court. We stayed in Yurts and they were clean, it's just that some windows are not working. Bathrooms are clean and well maintained. Just note that the Bathrooms within the park doesn't have a running water, you need to go to a spot in the middle of the Campground if you want a modern bathroom and a shower. Which is a little bit far from where the Yurts are. You need coins for the shower to work ($1 for a 3 minute shower).

Wow this was well worth the drive from Winnipeg!! Lakeview camp site area is where we stayed and I loved how quiet it was when we went. It was late summer so it wasn’t too busy. Slightly chilly but non the less a treat

The "lakeview" campground had a gorgeous view, plenty of privacy from your neighbors and the non-modern toilets were clean and well kept. A fair warning though, the mosquitos were atrocious. I mostly just used my time here as a parking pad to sleep for a night. There will definitely be a next time though and I'll have to spend more time exploring the park and make a point to visit the restaurant.
