Palmetto
Overview
Palmetto State Park offers a surprisingly tropical escape in the heart of the Texas coastal plains. Named for the dwarf palmettos that carpet the forest floor, this park feels more like a lush jungle than a traditional Texas woodland. The park is anchored by the San Marcos River, which provides a constant source of life for the diverse flora and fauna found throughout the grounds. It is a rare botanical sanctuary where visitors can experience a prehistoric landscape within a modern state park setting.
Location & Surroundings
Located just a short drive from Gonzales in the small community of Ottine, the park sits within the fertile Guadalupe River Valley. The surrounding landscape is characterized by rolling hills and agricultural land, but the park itself serves as a verdant oasis. Its central location makes it an easy stop for those traveling between San Antonio and Houston, offering a peaceful riverfront environment that feels miles away from the highway hustle.
Amenities & Park Features
The park features well-maintained RV sites, including options with full hookups and 50-amp service for larger rigs. Visitors can enjoy a variety of recreational facilities, such as the historic refectory built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. Outdoor amenities include multiple hiking and biking trails, a dedicated fishing pier on a small oxbow lake, and easy access points for launching canoes or kayaks into the gentle currents of the river.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
History buffs will appreciate the short drive to Gonzales, known as the "Lexington of Texas" for its pivotal role in the Texas Revolution. For a taste of local culture, travelers often head to nearby Luling for world-famous barbecue or to visit the unique local shops. Nature enthusiasts should prioritize exploring the park’s boardwalk trails, which offer prime viewing for migratory birds and the unique ephemeral swamps that define this region.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for nature photographers and birdwatchers who want to experience a rare botanical environment found nowhere else in the state. It is also a perfect fit for families seeking water-based recreation like paddleboarding or fishing in a serene, shaded setting. If you prefer a quiet, scenic retreat with a touch of history over a high-activity commercial resort, this park provides the tranquility you are looking for.

Restrooms are super clean and good. Arrangement and all are so perfect. Electric plug is near to your allocated area so boon for EV car users. Also they are providing firewood for fire by money. Gas station is hardly far 15-20 minutes. A perfect place for hangout, barbecue and all. I went with my family friends and we enjoyed alot.

Palmetto State Park is a hidden gem in Texas! The scenery is beautiful with lush greenery, unique dwarf palmettos, and peaceful trails that make you feel like you’re in a tropical oasis. The San Marcos River running through the park adds to the charm, and you can enjoy fishing, kayaking, or just relaxing by the water. Campsites are well-kept, restrooms are clean, and the staff is friendly and helpful. Perfect spot for hiking, picnicking, or a quiet weekend getaway in nature.

This park surprised us- it is very shaded, a great middle of summer destination as you aren't burning up on the trails. Sites were fresh poured blacktop so it was very level. All trails are bike friendly, and our little ones (5 and 7) had no problem biking them.

The park is beautiful, but it’s missing some things, like trash bins near every picnic area. Also, the restrooms are under renovation, and the place feels hot. The plants need more care. Overall, it’s a quiet place, and the best parts are the scenic viewpoint and the prickly pear cactus. My comfort rating for this place is 3 out of 5

We hike the Palmetto Interpretive trail as well as the River trail. The weather was perfect and the trails were empty. This is usually a hot humid time in this party of Texas but this week the weather has been great. The park facilities were clean and well maintained as were the trails. We had a great time. 10/10
