Palmetto Island

This is a tale of TWO campgrounds. Palmetto Island and Fontainebleau in Mandeville. Both parks were well maintained, both parks are quite pretty in their own right. Palmetto has much nicer sites with more privacy and the campers were friendly. Fontainebleau has smaller sites and is a bit more crowded and that’s to be expected as it’s much closer to New Orleans. BUT, campers at Palmetto were typically friendly and welcoming. Typical Cajun. The campers at Fontainebleau were not. They were downright pissy except for a lovely couple in a Country Coach and the only way I’ll return here is offseason during the week offseason. Oh don’t forget the happy damn dogs at Fontainebleau. What a phenomenal park. I really enjoyed my trip. Pro’s: in the middle of nowhereville but there’s still AT&T signal. There is WiFi but it’s slowwwwwwww… not a dealbreaker cause I don’t wanna hear from anyone while I’m away. My parents stayed on the road over so walking my dog there and back was great with excellent scenery, WELL kept grounds (grounds keepers are incredible and fast.. also super nice people) the check in people were SUPER friendly and gave me all the information verbally as well as giving me written of everything they said. They also gave me full exit instructions. My site was SPOTTLESS! Rocks beautiful and level, a nice slab with a picnic table and room to put a chair. Water and electric hookups were great to have for a tent camper. I usually lug it all in the truck but I didn’t have to use my reserves. I didn’t use the power because I’m totally solar for camping with propane cooking setup. They have several bathroom facilities with showers and laundry machines. Place was clean as you could ask for. Great job to the workers! They have other things to do like a water park area but I didn’t use that area of the park. The trails are so well maintained, I don’t know how yall get so much done. There wasn’t a fallen leaf on the path! Everything was mostly ideal… Cons: the public is just rude. I get it was Halloween and I get they have regulars there who get comfortable but people go to camp to enjoy peace quiet and nature. We don’t want to hear your zydeco blaring till after 10pm, or the good hour and a half loud argument of my neighbor and his wife. She wants to go to the beach, she hates going to the park and the kids are bored. They want the beach she exclaimed over and over. His argument was the value of the park and ironically the “peace and quiet” while they kept me up until 11:30 when they finally went into their camper. People ARGUE IN YOUR CAMPER!! We don’t want to hear it, especially when we are trying to sleep. Also “campground hosts” ones from Texas don’t give a damn about the speed limit. Most people are clearly over 15mph, usual 25, but some are absolute idiots. There’s a radar cop but I saw him once. It should be a 24/7 thing. If you can’t drive 15mph in this short little road, you’re an idiot. People on bikes, people walking dogs, people walking, kids, use your head! Slow down!!!! Other than the idiot public, the park is an 11 out of 10!

A beautiful park with decent ATT cell service. The only problem is the mosquitoes 🦟 are ferocious. I had a reaction to them. I was drinking Benadryl like water.

I would return with no hesitation. The sites were large enough to be comfortable and everything was so clean and well maintain. The only staff I interacted with were the ladies at the gate and they were very hospitable.

Awesome place to take the family! Love the nature trails, splash pad/park with access to shade, the picnic tables, accessible/spacious bathrooms with dressing rooms! Just a great place all the way around. Love it here’

Nice place to spend a day in nature. About 40 mins from downtown Laffy. Went specifically for birding in early May and was disappointed with variety of species - I heard the warbler but was never able to spot it. Nice for hiking and facilities/splash park though.

Beautiful palmetto palms throughout the park. We have never before seen such a landscape. Camping area is well laid out with adequate privacy. Staff was helpful. Would highly recommend this park.

Stayed early February. It's perfect for riding bikes. Sites large! Truly beautiful. We were not able to do too much of the trails due to so much water no mater which trail you took, but MILES to ride our bikes. We had a great time. Visiting the Tabasco Factory and Avery Island Jungle Garden was the most wonderful surprise. TRULY beautiful.

The park is beautiful!! It's $3 a person ages 3-65. The splash pad is big & clean. They have restrooms and places to get changed and are also kept very clean!! There are ponds to fish at one is a little walk from the splash pad. We could see the fish popping up from the water. They had picnic tables out by the pond and also by the splash pad. Great family day outside. They also offer camping and some hiking trails.

Large private RV sites which are level with gravel for your rig and a cement pad for the picnic table. Fire ring is set to the back and the water hook-up has great pressure. No issues with 30amp electricity & Verizon comes through with 3-4 bars. There's a 2 lane dump station near the entrance so no wait lines. There's also 2 laundry facilities; both clean, good working order and reasonably priced. The park has a lot to offer the family camper with a nature center, splash pad, two ponds and many pavilion picnic and fishing areas. We're enjoying the hard packed gravel nature paths and long bike rides on the paved roads. We were told the canoe run is riddled with logs right now so we skipped it but I bet this place is booming in the summer!

I really hadn't planned to stay here, but I'm so glad I did. Nice place, nice people, free wifi, and it is an incredible place for watching birds; especially turkey vultures (buzzards). I saw dozens of them hanging around, up close and personal like. Stop by and tell 'em PapaJoe sent ya!

Very nice campground/park. Friendly staff and park hosts. Large, secluded sites. You won't find any bathroom or laundry facilities any neater, cleaner or well maintained. Secured gate after hours.

Quiet and relaxing. Nice staff. Couldn't use Wifi to stream TV, too slow. But had 4 over the air stations. Good laundry facility. Would stay again. Gave us 50% discount for over 62.😊

This is awesome place to bring the family. Has splash pad for kids playground, pavilions, a meeting/ party rooms, comfort stations that have washer and dryers, restrooms, and showers. They also have 4 different camping Options: campers with all hookups, tents , cabins , and a primitive camping area. They have canoeing, you can rent golf carts, and a food truck 90 percent of the time. They also have great nature trails, and a few ponds you can fish in. Also have a boat launch to go into the Vermilion River . Awesome place to bring family or just just chill and enjoy the scenery. Me and all my family love this place . We hold family reunions almost every year.
