Parc National de Frontenac/Baie-Sauvage

Overview

Parc national de Frontenac, specifically the Baie-Sauvage sector, offers a serene escape into the diverse ecosystems of Quebec. This protected area is defined by the massive Grand lac Saint-François, providing a backdrop of pristine water and lush forests. RVers seeking a connection with nature will find a park that balances accessibility with deep wilderness preservation. It is a place where the sounds of the lake and the sightings of local wildlife take center stage over modern distractions.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in Sainte-Praxède, QC, the park lies on the border of the Eastern Townships and the Chaudière-Appalaches regions. The surrounding landscape is characterized by rolling hills and the expansive Grand lac Saint-François, which is one of the largest lakes in the province. The Baie-Sauvage area is particularly noted for its unique flora, including rare peat bogs and carnivorous plants, making the immediate environment feel both prehistoric and peaceful for visiting travelers.

Amenities & Park Features

The Baie-Sauvage sector provides well-maintained campsites suitable for various RV sizes, featuring options for two-service hookups including water and electricity. Essential facilities include clean washblocks with showers and toilets to ensure comfort during your stay. The park features a dedicated nautical center where visitors can rent canoes, kayaks, and pedal boats to explore the bay. For those traveling with bicycles, the park offers various paths that wind through the forest and along the shoreline.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Beyond the campsite, visitors can explore the Sentier de la Tourbière, a boardwalk trail that showcases the area's unique peat bog ecosystem. Boating and fishing on Grand lac Saint-François are primary draws, with opportunities to catch walleye or yellow perch. Nearby, the town of Thetford Mines offers a glimpse into the region’s industrial history through its museums. The surrounding rural roads provide scenic drives through quaint Quebecois villages, offering a taste of local culture and artisanal products.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for nature enthusiasts and birdwatchers who want to spot bald eagles or blue herons in their natural habitat. Beautiful national park. Canoe'd to the campsite which was very cool. They have beginner friendly and more advanced canoe camping.

Amazing. We stayed in the pret-a-camper yurt. Place was beautiful. Bathrooms and campground were clean. Large spacious areas. Lots of hiking trails and areas to rent bikes canoe, paddle boards, pedal boards. Staff were friendly too. Wildlife everywhere but stayed away from people, deers, frogs, chipmunks, squirrels birds.

Beautifully forest and lake campsite, lots of trails on the St-Daniel sector and easy access to the lake to use our kayak by a short portage. Small sandy beach, pédalos and kayak rentals, all within walking distance from the campsites. But not enough small loop hikes for us and not as much interesting belvedere or spot to visit before turning back (we prefer loops over back-forth trails). We could hear loons, great black lake better suited to kayaking than swimming since you could not see well in water. Perfect for nature lovers. Very few activities around outside the park.
