Pathfinder National Wildlife Refuge
Overview
Pathfinder National Wildlife Refuge offers a rugged and serene escape for RVers seeking the raw beauty of Wyoming's high plains. Established in 1909, it surrounds the Pathfinder Reservoir, providing a critical habitat for migratory birds and local wildlife. It is less of a manicured resort and more of a back-to-nature destination where the vast sky meets the rocky horizon of the Sweetwater River valley. This is a place where nature takes center stage, offering travelers a chance to disconnect from the modern world and immerse themselves in the quiet rhythms of the wild.
Location & Surroundings
Located roughly 45 miles southwest of Casper in Alcova, WY, the refuge sits at the edge of the Granite Mountains. The landscape is dominated by sagebrush, greasewood, and striking rock formations that define the high desert. Visitors arrive via Wyoming Highway 220, finding themselves in a remote area where the North Platte River feeds into the massive reservoir system. The environment creates a stark, beautiful contrast between the deep blue water and the sun-bleached desert terrain that surrounds it.
Amenities & Park Features
While the refuge itself focuses on conservation, the surrounding Bureau of Reclamation and county-managed lands offer several dry camping areas and semi-developed sites suitable for RVs. Most sites provide vault toilets and basic picnic tables, but travelers should arrive with full water tanks and plenty of power. The appeal lies in the spacious lakeside sites that offer direct access to the water for kayaks or small boats. Common features for RVers include:
- Gravel pads capable of accommodating larger rigs
- Public boat ramps for easy reservoir access
- Designated wildlife observation areas and hiking paths
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will find endless opportunities for bird watching, with species like American white pelicans and sage-grouse frequenting the area. The reservoir is a premier spot for trophy walleye fishing and trout fishing throughout the year. History buffs can explore the nearby Independence Rock, a landmark of the Oregon Trail, or the historic Pathfinder Dam, an engineering marvel from the early 20th century. The surrounding canyon walls and water-filled draws are also perfect for peaceful afternoon paddling trips.
Who This Park Is Best For
This location is ideal for boondockers and self-contained RVers who prefer solitude over luxury amenities. It is a perfect fit for nature photographers and anglers looking for a quiet base camp away from the usual crowds found in national parks. If you enjoy wide-open spaces, star-filled night skies, and a slower pace of life, this rugged Wyoming gem will provide the authentic outdoor experience you are searching for. It is best suited for those who come prepared to be self-sufficient in a remote environment.

Spent a morning out at Pathfinder National Wildlife Refuge and it was honestly one of the most peaceful outings I’ve had in a while. Driving through the four separate units around Pathfinder Reservoir you feel like you’ve stepped away from everything. The overlook off Highway 220 was perfect for stretching our legs and spotting birds by the water. We pulled into Bishops Point Campground and launched a small boat from the ramp, which was a simple setup and no fuss. The scenery is wide open and calming, with sagebrush grasslands framing the view. Saw a lot more than I expected including herons, ducks, and even some pronghorn wandering in the distance. The roads in were a bit rough in places so a vehicle with good clearance was helpful, but it was worth it for how quiet and scenic the place is. All in all, I’d go back in a heartbeat. If you want a spot to fish, birdwatch, or just breathe in the wild Wyoming air, this place checks all the boxes.

Quiet most of the time but little shade or shelter aside from numbered campsites having covered picnic tables.

I am so happy I stopped at Pathfinder. It was a chilly morning with cloud skies and beautiful to see. The small path has four interpretive signs, with all the local wildlife an excellent learning opportunity. So joyful to know someone cares about birds and their habitat.

Me and my family enjoyed this place so much. It definitely was not overcrowded and everybody we came in contact with was so helpful. Definitely will come back!
