Paxson Lake (BLM)

Overview

Paxson Lake (BLM) offers a quintessential Alaskan wilderness experience situated along the banks of a stunning glacially-fed lake. Managed by the Bureau of Land Management, this campground serves as a primary access point for the Gulkana National Wild and Scenic River. It provides a peaceful, remote retreat for those looking to immerse themselves in the rugged beauty and vast scale of the Copper River Basin. For RVers traveling the Richardson Highway, it is a significant stop for recreation and natural observation.

Location & Surroundings

Located at Mile 175 of the Richardson Highway near Gakona, the park is nestled within a dramatic landscape of rolling tundra and dense spruce forests. The lake itself spans roughly 12 miles, offering sweeping views of the surrounding mountains and big Alaska skies. Visitors often find themselves surrounded by the deep silence of the North, where the crisp air and the occasional call of a loon define the atmosphere. The area is a prime example of the transition between the high alpine and the river valley ecosystems.

Amenities & Park Features

As a BLM managed site, the facilities are primitive yet well-maintained to support self-contained RVers and tent campers. The campground features approximately 50 sites equipped with standard fire rings and picnic tables. While there are no electric or sewer hookups, guests have access to the following features:

  • Potable water pumps located throughout the loops
  • Clean and accessible vault toilets
  • A sturdy concrete boat ramp for motorized vessels
  • A dedicated hand-launch site for kayaks and canoes

The layout provides enough space for most modest-sized RVs to navigate comfortably, though big rigs should exercise caution when selecting a spot.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw for many is the incredible fishing, with the lake and nearby river systems famous for Arctic grayling and trophy lake trout. Many travelers use this site as a staging point for epic multi-day float trips down the Gulkana River. Beyond the water, hikers can explore the surrounding terrain or take a scenic drive to witness the glaciers of the eastern Alaska Range. Photographers will appreciate the unobstructed views of the Wrangell Mountains and the vibrant summer wildflowers that carpet the landscape in June and July.

Who This Park Is Best For

This location is ideal for independent travelers who prioritize natural beauty and tranquility over resort-style luxuries. It is a perfect fit for serious anglers, backcountry boaters, and wildlife photographers who want to experience an authentic Alaska wilderness setting. If you enjoy the simplicity of dry camping and want a front-row seat to some of the state's most dramatic landscapes and pristine waters, this park is an essential stop on your northern journey.

Nice clean campground. Spacious spots. Just be prepared to be eaten alive by mosquitos!

This was not the most well thought out campground I've been to. Fire rings 5ft away from tent bases (tents and sparks dont mix) maps in the wrong orientation, most sites are TINY campsites you can barely fit a vehicle into let alone a tent. Only the walk in sites have access to the lake... I thought this was a lake campground? BUGS BUGS BUGS and more BUGS. Fishing is tomorrow (since there's no access from camp). Which also means I have to pack everything up, and drive 3/4 of a mile down to the boat launch... Fishing was a bust. Tons of fish down at the south end but no bites. Went to the north end as well, but no action. Checked this spot off the always wanted to try list, but I don't think we'll be back.

Nice quiet campground. Sites are pretty level, no water yet but that wasn't a big deal for us. It is available nearby. Pit toilets are clean and stocked. Would stay again.

Great place to hang out for a few days. Cheap enough and you can dump your RV if you pay to stay. The water still wasn't fixed but you can go 30 miles to another campground and get water if you need it. You are in the woods by the water in Alaska so expect mosquitos by the millions.

Clean bathrooms, ATT coverage decent. The spot we were in was on a hill and very difficult to get it level. Was not very busy while we were there with campers, but there was a lot of trucks pulling empty boat trailers around.
