Payette/Cold Springs

Overview

Cold Springs Campground offers a refreshing mountain retreat within the expansive Payette National Forest. Situated just north of Council, this destination provides a classic high-country escape characterized by crisp alpine air and a profound sense of isolation. It serves as an ideal home base for travelers who appreciate the rugged, unfiltered beauty of Idaho's central mountains and the tranquility of a site deeply integrated into the natural forest landscape.

Location & Surroundings

The park is located approximately 16 miles northwest of Council, Idaho, accessible via forest roads that wind through the scenic backcountry. As visitors ascend toward the site, the landscape shifts dramatically from the rolling ranch lands of the valley to dense stands of Douglas fir and towering ponderosa pine. This high-elevation setting creates a cool, shaded environment that remains refreshing even when temperatures climb in the surrounding lower elevations during the peak of summer.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a traditional forest service facility, prioritizing a quiet, natural experience over modern commercial luxuries. RVers will find essential amenities including vault toilets and seasonal potable water available at communal pumps. Each site is intentionally spaced to provide privacy and is equipped with a heavy-duty picnic table and a fire ring for evening campfires. Travelers should arrive fully prepared for dry camping, as there are no electrical, water, or sewer hookups available at the individual sites.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find an abundance of recreation immediately surrounding the campground. The Weiser River Trail, a renowned rail-to-trail project, is a short drive away and offers spectacular vistas for cyclists and hikers. Additionally, the area serves as a gateway to the Council Mountain Trail system, where backcountry explorers can discover hidden meadows and diverse wildlife. Nearby mountain streams also provide excellent opportunities for seasonal fishing and photography of the rugged terrain.

Who This Park Is Best For

This location is best suited for self-contained RVers who value solitude and the smell of pine needles over resort-style features. Because many sites are nestled within mature timber, the park is a perfect fit for van lifers, truck campers, and smaller trailers looking for a primitive experience. If your travel style involves disconnecting from the digital world to reconnect with nature, this serene Idaho gem provides the perfect backdrop for your next mountain adventure.

Perfectly beautiful!! Practically had the place to ourselves. Plenty of clean bathrooms and drinking water. Kid and dog friendly. Short walk to lost valley reservoir. Will visit again.

Group spot 2 does not have parking for trailers and RV's at the camp spot. You have park in a parking lot and walk to the camp spot where the tables and fire pit are. This would have been a great group site if everyone had tents. We made it work but having the trailers in full sun sucked. The tables and fire pit had shade in the afternoon. Had a great trip still but wish the reservation site had more info

Great location super close to lake.. I was in spot 2. They have a lot of shaded spots, most are FCFS. I will be camping here again.

Me and my family had a group site. It was verry spacious, we got to see the cows walk by the site. The only downside is there are only 2 water locations throughout the entire grounds and it can be a walk depending on where your site is but overall great experience.

I love going here. It's always clean and quiet, close to water.
