Pearl Hill
Overview
Pearl Hill State Park offers a peaceful retreat into the dense woodlands of Northern Massachusetts. Covering over 1,000 acres of tranquil forest, this destination provides a rustic escape from the hustle of city life. It is particularly known for its connection to neighboring Willard Brook State Forest, creating a vast network of trails and natural beauty. For RVers, it offers a traditional camping experience where the focus remains on the natural landscape and quiet evenings spent under a thick canopy of majestic pine trees.
Location & Surroundings
Situated in the town of Townsend, the park is defined by its towering pines and rolling terrain. The setting is deeply immersive, making visitors feel miles away from civilization despite being within a reasonable driving distance of the Boston metropolitan area. The park is anchored by a five-acre pond that features a refreshing sandy beach, providing a central focal point for summer relaxation. The surrounding Willard Brook area enhances the location, offering scenic views of babbling brooks and rocky outcroppings that characterize this beautiful part of the state.
Amenities & Park Features
As a state-managed facility, the amenities emphasize a connection to the great outdoors rather than modern luxuries. The campground features 51 sites, many of which are level enough to accommodate RVs. While there are no hookups available, the park provides essential comforts including centrally located restrooms and hot showers. Each site is equipped with a sturdy picnic table and fire ring, perfect for classic campfire meals. Paved roads throughout the park are excellent for easy biking, while a dedicated dump station is available to support self-contained travelers during their stay.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to explore starting with the scenic four-mile trail connecting Pearl Hill directly to Willard Brook State Forest. This path is highly popular for hiking, bird watching, and mountain biking through the woods. During the warmer months, the pond is a hotspot for swimming and seasonal fishing opportunities. Nearby, the town of Townsend offers a glimpse into New England history with its classic common and local architecture. For those willing to drive a short distance, the Nashua River Rail Trail provides additional miles of paved paths for cycling.
Who This Park Is Best For
Pearl Hill is ideal for RVers who prioritize a secluded, rustic environment over the high-speed connectivity of a commercial resort. It is a fantastic choice for families looking for a swimming-focused summer getaway or couples seeking a quiet, meditative weekend in the woods. Because the sites are best suited for small to mid-sized rigs, it attracts travelers who enjoy dry camping and wish to be fully immersed in the sights and sounds of the Massachusetts wilderness without the distractions of modern life.

Really, really beautiful park. Staff are wonderful, there's so many great trails to walk on, and it's never too busy. Well maintained.

Great camping at this state park: The hiking 🥾 is great, even though some of the trails can use better markings. The State Forest is BEAUTIFUL and I encourage everyone to hike around. The Friends' Trail is challenging but worth the day-long trip there and back. The campsites are pleasantly flat, with a fire pit, grill and picnic table each. The facilities are as clean as the fellow-campers are at following basic cleanliness rules.

Lots of trails to walk , run, or ride. This is an active campground during camping season. Good facilities, with bathrooms and showers. Lots of places for day camping with picnic tables and grills. Very safe with a ranger on site whenever it's officially open. Keep dogs on leash and you will be fine.

A winter visit so no services. Did a 6.2 mile hike that took us into the adjacent Willard Brook SP. I'd like to come back and do some more trails.
