Pelton Park

Overview

Pelton Park offers a scenic retreat on the shores of Lake Simtustus in the heart of Central Oregon. Managed by Portland General Electric, this park provides a balanced mix of high-desert beauty and water-based recreation. It serves as a popular seasonal destination for travelers looking to escape to a well-maintained campground that offers a sense of seclusion without sacrificing modern conveniences.

Location & Surroundings

Located just northwest of Madras, the park is tucked into the rugged basalt cliffs of the Deschutes River canyon. The environment features a striking contrast between the deep blue reservoir water and the arid, golden hills of the high desert. Visitors can enjoy sweeping views of the canyon walls while relaxing at campsites that are often shaded by mature trees, providing a cool canopy during the warm summer months.

Amenities & Park Features

The facility caters to RVers with spacious sites that include electrical and water hookups. A major highlight of the park is the on-site marina, which features a boat launch and rentals for those wanting to get out on the water. Guests also have access to a dedicated fishing bridge, a camp store stocked with essentials, and clean restroom facilities with hot showers, making it a comfortable base for extended stays.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Water activities are the primary draw, with Lake Simtustus being an ideal spot for kayaking and fishing for trout or kokanee. For those willing to explore further, the dramatic geology of The Cove Palisades State Park is just a short drive away. Additionally, rockhounds often visit the nearby Richardson’s Rock Ranch to hunt for Oregon’s famous thundereggs, while the town of Madras offers local dining and essential services.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal match for families and anglers who desire immediate access to the water in a community-focused environment. It suits RVers who prefer a more natural, state-park-style vibe rather than a crowded commercial resort. If you are looking for a serene waterfront base to explore the volcanic landscapes of Jefferson County, Pelton Park is an excellent choice for your next road trip.

This is a great park! The only "downside" is there is no cell reception and electric only with no dump site. Lots of marina choices, great junior ranger program, clean facilities, and a refreshingly cold lake. Beautiful!

Love this camp ground. Lots of amenities, boat ramp, several docks, swimming area, and a dog dock. The store has most anything you would have forgot, but Madras is only 15 - 20 minutes away.

Pictures don't do justice. The dam, waterfall, lake and surrounding landscape are all breathtaking.

Stopped by here to try some fishing. We'll be back to camp this coming summer. We were very impressed with the cleanliness of the park and the staff.
