Peninsula

Overview

Peninsula State Park is widely considered the crown jewel of the Wisconsin State Park system. Spanning nearly 3,800 acres along the rugged Door County coastline, this destination offers a mix of shoreline vistas and dense hardwood forests. It provides a quintessential camping experience where scenic overlooks, historical landmarks, and diverse ecosystems meet modern outdoor recreation. RV travelers often flock here to experience the unique Niagara Escarpment landscape that defines this iconic Midwestern peninsula, making it a bucket-list destination for anyone touring the Great Lakes region.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in the charming village of Fish Creek, the park sits on the rocky shores of Green Bay. The landscape is characterized by towering limestone bluffs and miles of accessible shoreline that offer some of the most celebrated sunset views in the state. Because it is located in the heart of Door County, visitors are perfectly positioned to explore coastal communities like Ephraim and Sister Bay. The surrounding area feels like a peaceful maritime escape, tucked away from the hustle of major cities.

Amenities & Park Features

The park features several distinct campgrounds, such as Tennison Bay and Nicolet Bay, with many sites offering electric hookups suitable for various RV sizes. While full-service sewer and water connections are not available at individual sites, the park provides several convenient facilities:

  • Centrally located dump stations and fresh water fill points for tank management.
  • Access to well-maintained bathhouses with flush toilets and hot showers.
  • An on-site 18-hole golf course and a professional summer theater located within the woods.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate over 20 miles of hiking trails and the Sunset Bike Path, a famous crushed-stone trail perfect for family-friendly rides through the woods. A visit to the Eagle Bluff Lighthouse offers a glimpse into 19th-century maritime history, while the accessible Eagle Tower provides breathtaking panoramic views of the water and nearby islands. Just outside the gates, the village of Fish Creek offers local boutiques, cozy cafes, and the famous Door County fish boils that provide a true taste of local culture.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for active families and nature photographers who prioritize scenery and outdoor activities over resort-style luxury. It is a perfect match for RVers who prefer a rustic park atmosphere and do not mind utilizing onboard tanks or park bathhouses. If you enjoy waking up to the sound of wind through the cedars and spending your days exploring trails or the water, Peninsula State Park is the premier choice for your next Wisconsin getaway.

A beautiful place all year round, especially in summer and fall. It has an amazing view , perfect for enjoying nature or taking pictures. Very peaceful, clean, and a great spot to spend the day with family or just relax. Highly recommend!

Eagles Tower has only been open since 2021 so it’s worth coming back to Door County to experience! We had crowds to see the fall foliage- but were told summer crowds are really big. So glad we didn’t deal with that! The ranger at the entrance gate told us which trail would be best for me - having had a fractured leg. Still, stop to look up because tree roots are aiming to trip you!!! The views were amazing and taking the ramp up and stairs down was fun. We are at the golf course clubhouse. Yummy! And swag was discounted because it was end of season. It’s incredible this place is open from 6 am to 11 pm. We came back at night and loved the dark sky full of stars. (We were NOT brave enough to climb up the tower or hike…) Hope you have a full day or more to enjoy this landmark beauty!

8/21/25 - this park is absolutely gorgeous! Definitely a MUST STOP and easily a reason to visit Door County all on its own. This was our favorite stop of the entire trip!!! Lots of bikers enjoying the shady roads and trails. The views are spectacular and Eagle Tower is such a unique structure, with a fantastic view and picture opportunities. Numerous picnic and camping areas to be enjoyed. Lots of water all around to enjoy as well. Very scenic and so much to do!

This park is spectacular. Excellent hiking and biking trails. It is a lot bigger than you think so bring bikes or plan to drive places and hike out from there. We have a 9 and 10 year old and the Eagle trail was just about at their ability level. And younger and it would have been too much for them.

From someone who has been to every state park in Wisconsin, this park is AMAZING. We rank this state park in the top three in the state of Wisconsin. Peninsula State Park offers miles of beautiful bike trails and hiking trails. There is a great beach if you’re looking for a beach day. Just one note, the beach does not allow dogs. Dogs are welcomed in the campgrounds and many trails. There are multiple campgrounds which are all pretty great here. You can launch boats and kayaks at the park. There are also rentals available at the beach for many things including kayaks, canoes, paddle boards, bikes, and more! We strongly recommend that you bring your bikes to this park when you visit. There are so many beautiful biking trails. The scenic views of the water are also beautiful! We highly recommend Peninsula State Park!
