PG & E/Carson Pass/Lower Blue Lake
Overview
Lower Blue Lake Campground, managed by PG&E, offers a serene escape high in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Situated at an elevation of approximately 8,000 feet, this facility provides a true alpine experience for RVers willing to swap modern luxuries for raw natural beauty. The park is part of the larger Blue Lakes area, known for its crystal-clear waters and dramatic granite backdrops. Visitors can expect a peaceful environment where the primary sounds are the wind through the pines and the gentle lapping of the lake against the shore.
Location & Surroundings
The park is located near the historic Carson Pass area, roughly 12 miles south of Highway 88 via the winding Blue Lakes Road. The drive in is breathtaking, passing through the wide expanses of Hope Valley before climbing into more rugged, high-altitude terrain. Surrounded by the Mokelumne Wilderness, the campground sits directly on the shores of Lower Blue Lake. This remote location ensures exceptionally dark night skies and crisp mountain air, making it a premier spot for high-country exploration near Markleeville, CA.
Amenities & Park Features
As a PG&E-managed site, the amenities are kept simple to maintain the rugged charm of the Sierra Nevada. The campground is designed for dry camping, meaning visitors should prepare for a primitive stay. Available features include:
- Vault toilets and seasonally available potable water spigots.
- Individual campsites equipped with heavy-duty fire rings and picnic tables.
- Direct access to the shoreline for non-motorized boat launching.
There are no electrical, water, or sewer hookups available, so RVers must arrive with full fresh water tanks and empty waste tanks to enjoy a comfortable stay.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will find no shortage of activities in this high-elevation playground. The lake itself is ideal for non-motorized boating, kayaking, and fishing for rainbow and brook trout. Hiking trails are abundant in the area, including access points to the famous Pacific Crest Trail located just a short drive away. During the mid-summer months, the surrounding meadows are famous for vibrant wildflower displays. For those seeking a more relaxing afternoon, the nearby Grover Hot Springs State Park offers a chance to soak in mineral waters.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for self-contained RVers who appreciate a rustic, off-grid atmosphere. Because of the winding mountain access road and the lack of hookups, it is best suited for those comfortable with boondocking in smaller to mid-sized rigs. It is a haven for nature photographers and hikers looking to immerse themselves in the high Sierra landscape. If you value silence, scenery, and mountain solitude over commercial resort-style amenities, this is the perfect summer retreat.

8000 feet. August 23. Some wind wind chill around 45 degrees. I was bundled up the whole time. Cold weather was not comfortable to me. Fisherman's paradise.

Nice PG&E campground. Lots of lakes up here to explore. Even better if you have a side by side, dirtbike, or quad. Fishing was fantastic, caught several large cutthroat trout in a short time.
