PG & E/Carson Pass/Upper Blue Lake
Overview
Upper Blue Lake offers a quintessential High Sierra escape at an elevation of over 8,000 feet. Managed by PG&E, this campground is a favorite for those seeking a rugged, off-grid experience away from the crowds of more developed resorts. The crystal-clear waters and surrounding granite peaks provide a dramatic backdrop for a peaceful retreat in the heart of Alpine County. It is a place where nature remains the primary focus and the pace of life slows down significantly.
Location & Surroundings
Located near Markleeville, California, the park is situated within the stunning Carson Pass region. The drive up Blue Lakes Road provides breathtaking views of the High Sierra landscape, characterized by jagged peaks and expansive alpine meadows. Visitors will find themselves surrounded by the Mokelumne Wilderness, where the air is thin and the stars shine exceptionally bright. This remote setting ensures a quiet atmosphere where the sounds of the wind and water take center stage.
Amenities & Park Features
As a primitive facility, the park focuses on the natural environment. Travelers should note that there are no hookups available, making it an ideal spot for self-contained RVs and camper vans. The park provides basic necessities such as:
- Vault toilets and seasonal piped water
- Large, spaced-out campsites with natural buffers
- Fire rings and picnic tables at each individual site
Because of its high-altitude location, the camping season is limited, usually running from mid-summer through early autumn depending on yearly snow levels.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor recreation is the primary draw for visitors to this area. The lake is perfect for kayaking and canoeing, though gasoline motors are prohibited to maintain the serenity of the water. Anglers frequently visit to catch trout, while hikers can access sections of the Pacific Crest Trail nearby. For those looking to relax after a long hike, the famous Grover Hot Springs State Park is a short drive away in Markleeville, offering soothing mineral pools and scenic valley views.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is best suited for dry-camping enthusiasts who appreciate solitude and raw natural beauty over modern luxuries. It is a fantastic choice for photographers and stargazers looking for incredibly dark skies. While smaller trailers and motorhomes can navigate the access roads, it is most popular with boondockers and those with high-clearance vehicles. If you enjoy waking up to alpine vistas and stepping directly into the wilderness, this is your ideal Sierra stop.

Beautiful place to camp, the maintenance is excellent, the hosts are incredibly friendly, I forgot the marshmallows for my daughters and they kindly gave us some. Also, due to the weather, we couldn't make a wood fire and they offered us their gas fire pit, Thank you for helping my family have an incredible weekend.

Past the lower blue lake CG the paved road ends. Some sections are narrow and lots pot holes . The bear box are decent size please use them. We had an incident where someone left trash out and their cooler and a bear came into camp. There are trash at the site, potable water, and the host are really good about maintaining the bathrooms. Some of the sites have space for only 1 tent however all the car parking are long enough for 2 cars and If needed can put a tent there as well.

Sorry for the terrible photo but I wasn’t there to take pictures, so…. Beautiful campground. Clean, quiet and fairly remote. Easy dirt road getting in. This campground isn’t built for the huge, house sized monstrosity RVs so don’t try bringing one of those here. You won’t make it. Sites are huge and private but NOT level at all, so bring stuff to level your camper. All in all one of my favorite campgrounds.

This is such a beautiful spot! The campground is at the end of the road past all of the other blue lakes campgrounds. It has 32 spots 9 of which are first come first serve. During the week it is not too busy but can get quite full on the weekends. There are vault toilets that were very clean. It is $23 a night with no hookups but there are water spigots around! Pets are $2 a night. Very close to the lake, hiking, and off road trails. Campsites all have fire pits, bear boxes, and picnic tables. There are bears! So be careful! Definitely some fickle fish in the lake, some people have luck but we didn't! Highly recommend this amazing campground!
