PG & E/Pit River/Cassel Campground

Overview

The PG&E Pit River Cassel Campground offers a serene escape into the heart of Northern California’s wild landscapes. Located along the banks of the peaceful Pit River, this facility is part of the utility company's public recreation system, providing a well-maintained yet rustic environment for travelers. Unlike modern commercial resorts, this park emphasizes a deep connection with nature and the sound of flowing water, making it a favorite for those looking to disconnect from digital distractions and enjoy the Shasta County backcountry.

Location & Surroundings

Nestled in the small, quiet community of Cassel, California, the campground sits within a lush, forested valley characterized by volcanic geology. The surrounding landscape is defined by the Cassel Forebay and crystal-clear spring-fed waters that stay cool even in the height of summer. Visitors will find themselves surrounded by towering pines and diverse wildlife, creating a tranquil backdrop that feels worlds away from the busy corridors of the interstate while remaining accessible for mid-sized RVs.

Amenities & Park Features

As a traditional primitive campground, the facility provides potable water and well-kept vault toilets rather than the high-density hookups found in urban parks. Each site typically includes a sturdy picnic table and a steel fire ring for evening campfires under the stars. While there are no sewer or electrical connections at the sites, the spacious and level layouts easily accommodate self-contained RVs and vans. The park is highly regarded for its cleanliness and the generous shade provided by the mature tree canopy.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Anglers flock here for the world-class trout fishing available in the Pit River and the legendary waters of nearby Hat Creek. Just a short drive away is the spectacular McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park, home to one of the most iconic and beautiful waterfalls in the western United States. For those willing to explore further, the volcanic wonders and high-elevation trails of Lassen Volcanic National Park provide endless opportunities for hiking and geological discovery.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for boondockers and fly-fishers who prioritize proximity to pristine waters over luxury amenities. It is a perfect fit for travelers with smaller trailers, truck campers, or camper vans who enjoy a quiet, contemplative atmosphere. If your travel goal involves kayaking, bird watching, or simply reading by the river in a peaceful mountain setting, this campground offers the perfect home base for your Northern California adventure.

We love it here. The fishing is awesome. It's not far to go to Burney falls and other places. It's just gorgeous

This is a PGE campground right to a part of Hat Creek. There is fishing right from the campground. Each campsite has a fire ring and a picnic table. There are garbage cans and pit toilets. There is some room and shrubbery between campsites which makes it nice and gives privacy. Some sites are big enough for a 32' 5th wheel.
