Philpott Lake - COE/Salthouse Branch

Overview

Salthouse Branch Park, managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, offers a serene escape on the pristine shores of Philpott Lake. Tucked away in the rolling greenery of Virginia, this destination is defined by its lush forest canopy and direct access to exceptionally clear waters. It serves as an ideal spot for those who prefer the quiet, restorative rhythm of nature over the bustling atmosphere of commercial resorts, providing a genuine lakeside retreat for every visitor.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in Henry, VA, the park is part of the larger Philpott Lake system, which spans several counties in the Blue Ridge Mountains foothills. The surrounding landscape is characterized by steep, wooded slopes and miles of undeveloped shoreline. This remote atmosphere provides a perfect backdrop for observing local wildlife, such as deer and wild turkeys, while enjoying a quiet sunrise over the scenic overlooks that dot the region.

Amenities & Park Features

The park features well-maintained campsites, many of which provide electric and water hookups suitable for a variety of RV sizes. Guests have access to a dedicated swimming beach, a multi-lane boat launch, and several picnic shelters for afternoon gatherings. Essential facilities include clean restroom and shower houses along with a convenient dump station, ensuring that RVers have the necessary comforts while immersed in a rustic, outdoor-focused environment.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate being just a short drive from Fairy Stone State Park, famous for its unique staurolite crystals and extensive trail systems. The lake itself is a premier destination for freshwater fishing, known specifically for its populations of largemouth bass and walleye. For those willing to explore further, the iconic Blue Ridge Parkway is easily accessible, offering world-class scenic driving and diverse hiking opportunities through the Appalachian wilderness.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is a perfect match for boating enthusiasts and families who enjoy traditional camping activities like swimming, kayaking, and campfire cooking. It appeals most to RVers seeking a peaceful, nature-heavy experience rather than a high-amenity luxury park. If you value privacy, dark night skies for stargazing, and immediate access to water-based recreation, Salthouse Branch provides one of the most authentic camping experiences in Virginia.

I loved this park! This was my first time here. The sites were great, trails were excellent. Our group really enjoyed our stay. Definitely a place to visit. Thank you to the Army Corp of Engineers for maintaining and preserving this park.

We drive up 1.5 hours just for day use. Nice weekend beach/lake getaway.

This Virginia 💞 campground is a gem – sites are spacious and level (a rarity!), the bathhouse sparkles and the hot showers are divine. Plus, the park rangers and deputies' watchful eyes made us feel super safe. This place is clearly well-loved and it shows! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Fun peaceful camping trip. We have a larger 5th wheel unit. Easy access to the lake and a boat ramp. Only has water and electric hookups. There was no way for me to use the dump station. It is a tight turn into and out of it, even for a small unit. Clean bathhouse and showers. Has 2 swimming areas. Had a good time there.

Oh I love this place. We go every weekend. We've only been to the lake part but we have reserved and paid for lot 54 to camp in a tent. It is so beautiful right on the water! Offers grills and soft areas for your tent! The lake Beach area here is my favorite to go to because it's mostly family's and older people. Very quiet and very nice no drama. When things do occur the park office people and the park officer is right on it making sure it stays family friendly. It's quiet and clean and the workers are so very charming. Since we go so often and have the yearly pass they know us now and they are so great with my son! Wonderful place ❤️🌅 just wonderful. They also have cooking areas for people just visiting the lake. It's a little cut off and so darn peaceful they're stairs leading straight to the water from there! That's our new favorite spot!!
