Pike-San Isabel/Angel Of Shavano
Overview
The Angel of Shavano Campground offers a quintessential high-altitude retreat within the Pike-San Isabel National Forest. Situated at approximately 9,100 feet, this seasonal destination provides a peaceful atmosphere for travelers seeking to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with nature. Named after the famous snow angel formation on nearby Mount Shavano, this campground serves as a gateway to the rugged beauty of the Sawatch Range, offering a cooling respite during the warm summer months for those exploring the Colorado Rockies.
Location & Surroundings
Located just west of Maysville, Colorado, the park is nestled along the banks of the North Fork Arkansas River. The terrain is characterized by dense stands of aspen, spruce, and fir trees, which provide excellent shade and a sense of privacy between sites. The surrounding landscape is dominated by soaring peaks and alpine meadows, creating a dramatic backdrop for morning coffee. Its proximity to Highway 50 makes it accessible, yet the thick forest canopy helps maintain a secluded, backcountry feel away from highway noise.
Amenities & Park Features
This is a traditional forest service facility, prioritizing a rustic camping experience over modern luxuries. The park features include:
- Vault toilets and potable water accessible via hand pumps.
- Gravel parking pads equipped with heavy-duty picnic tables and fire rings.
- Direct access to the river for fishing and relaxing by the water.
While there are no electric, water, or sewer hookups, the natural spacing provides a level of privacy rarely found in commercial parks. Sites are generally back-in only and are best suited for small to mid-sized RVs and camper vans.

First time camping at the Angel of Shavano Campground. ELIZE & her dog, "Peanut" best camp hostesses ever!!! She was very friendly & is always informative & accommodating. The sites were well cared for & the restroom was always clean. Tons of people - all sites were taken. I had #4, which was well shaded & at least semi-private. I will definitely go back!!!

Awesome campground. Out of the way stop to relax and enjoy the peace and quiet. Angel Civano campground is a microcosm of all that’s good and the wilderness of Colorado.

Beautiful area with so many options, right on the Colorado trail. We had the group site reserved which has it's own picnic area and vault toilet. When the group site is not reserved, it serves as an open picnic area. Because of this we had random people entering our camp everyday to attempt to use the bathroom in the middle of our area and acting very entitled about it. It was very frustrating as we had 5 dogs and 5 toddlers running around. They seriously need better signs for that area when it is being occupied.

Special place... off the beaten path. Try to make the moderate hike to North Fork Reservoir. Beautiful up there
