Pike-San Isabel/Mt Princeton
Overview
The Pike-San Isabel National Forest near Mt. Princeton offers a quintessentially Coloradan camping experience. Located in the shadows of the massive Sawatch Range, this area provides a gateway to some of the state's most iconic alpine scenery. Unlike a traditional luxury resort, this destination focuses on providing a rustic escape where the sound of the wind through the pines replaces the noise of highway traffic. It is an ideal spot for those seeking a deeper connection with the high-altitude wilderness of Nathrop.
Location & Surroundings
Nestled within the Chalk Creek Canyon, the area is situated at an elevation of approximately 8,600 feet. This location places visitors between the charming towns of Buena Vista and Salida, providing a perfect balance of seclusion and accessibility. The surrounding terrain is dominated by Ponderosa pines and Douglas firs, with the striking chalk cliffs providing a unique geological backdrop. The proximity to Mt. Princeton, one of Colorado's famous 14ers, ensures that dramatic mountain vistas are visible from nearly every angle.
Amenities & Park Features
As a traditional Forest Service site, the amenities here are designed for self-contained RVs and tent campers. The park focuses on the essentials of the outdoor experience:
- Sturdy fire rings and picnic tables at each site.
- Access to vault toilets maintained by the Forest Service.
- Seasonal drinking water available through communal hand pumps.
The sites are known for being well-spaced, offering a level of privacy and immersion in nature that is rarely found in private commercial parks. Because there are no hookups, visitors should arrive prepared for a true off-grid experience.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
One of the primary draws to this area is the Mount Princeton Hot Springs, located just a short drive down the road, where visitors can soak in natural thermal waters. For those interested in history, the St. Elmo Ghost Town is one of the best-preserved mining towns in the state and offers a fascinating day trip. Outdoor enthusiasts can explore the nearby Agnes Vaille Falls trail or take on the challenge of hiking the Colorado Trail, which winds through the heart of the forest.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is best suited for adventurous boondockers and RVers who enjoy dry camping in a majestic mountain setting. Because of the tighter turns and smaller pads characteristic of forest service roads, it is ideal for smaller rigs, camper vans, and truck campers. If your travel style involves ditching the Wi-Fi in favor of stargazing and direct trailhead access, this park provides the perfect basecamp for exploring the high country of Chaffee County.

Great place to start camping season. Close to home and easy access. Great open views of the night sky. And yes, I took that picture of the moon there with my phone camera.

Amazing View at Devils Head Firewatch tower, easy but uphill hike with many switchbacks, truly beautiful 💫 Those stairs to the top were NO JOKE but definitely worth it

It’s so beautiful here. I only got to explore a small part of it and can’t wait to go back. Here’s some pics from the Aspen Ridge Trail.

A wonderful national forest. Please be respectful of private property, don't litter and stay the trails. Also be aware of where you're parking and keep the roads clear for first responders.

It no longer offers free camp sites. $15 a night now. I believe now that it's not free is why it was very quiet and secluded. I didn't see but maybe 5 or 6 vehicles the entire weekend. I was able to enjoy being nude the whole time because no one was around!
