Pisgah/Carolina Hemlocks
Overview
Carolina Hemlocks Recreation Area offers a deep dive into the natural splendor of the Pisgah National Forest. Situated along the pristine South Toe River, this campground provides a serene mountain escape for travelers seeking to disconnect from the digital world. The park is characterized by its namesake towering hemlock trees and the constant, soothing sounds of rushing water, making it a premier destination for those who value scenic beauty and a rugged, authentic camping experience over modern resort frills.
Location & Surroundings
Located roughly 12 miles south of Burnsville, North Carolina, the park sits at the eastern base of the Black Mountains. This region is home to some of the highest peaks in the eastern United States, including the famous Mount Mitchell. The surrounding landscape is a lush tapestry of rhododendrons, ferns, and hardwoods, providing dense natural shade and a refreshing cool microclimate that offers a welcome reprieve for RVers during the humid summer months.
Amenities & Park Features
As a traditional Forest Service facility, the amenities here focus on the essentials of outdoor living. RVers will find paved parking spurs suitable for smaller trailers and camper vans, though it is important to note there are no hookups available at the sites. The park features well-maintained bathhouses with flush toilets and hot showers, as well as several potable water stations. Each campsite is equipped with a sturdy picnic table and a fire ring, ideal for evening meals and riverside relaxation.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Adventure is always within reach with the iconic Blue Ridge Parkway just a short drive from the park entrance. Guests often spend their days tubing down the South Toe River or testing their skills at fly fishing in the river's clear, cold pools. Hikers can easily access the trail to Roaring Fork Falls or take a scenic drive to the summit of Mount Mitchell State Park for breathtaking 360-degree views of the Appalachian range.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is the perfect fit for boondockers and small-trailer owners who prioritize a quiet, rustic atmosphere. Due to the tight turns and lack of utility connections, it is not recommended for big-rig enthusiasts or those requiring constant connectivity. It is an ideal sanctuary for nature lovers and families who want a front-row seat to North Carolina’s wilderness, offering a chance to sleep under a dark, star-filled sky away from city lights.

Been here twice, and it's one of our favorite campsites. We've stayed on the "main side" by the river and the "back side" on the other side of the highway. The back side was less crowded, and you were not as close to other people. But on the main side you have the obvious perks of beautiful views of the river and hearing the river the entire night. Also the bathrooms are closer on the main side. Would definitely come again (and again) on either side

My grandson had his birthday party there. Beautiful place. Camping, swimming but its mountain water, very cold even in the hottest months. Worth the drive.

Nice campground, very scenic. There are some nice campsites and some need work. Some of the tent sites are not flat. The bathrooms are nice and the showers are relatively warm. Very limited cell service. There are many places to sit by the South Toe River.

Fun swimming spot. Can rent the pavilion for events. Can ride tubs down and walk back up. Just don't go to far past bridge. The water is much more shallow then it was before. There seems to be one spot for jumping at your own risk. 5 dollars to park for the day. Shower rooms and bathrooms. Small camp store where you can get candy and sodas and usually bait. They also have primitive camp spots as well as rv camping.

The campground is ridiculously priced for sites that are right on top of each other and separated by a state highway making all the upper number sites cross that to access the river or the only showers. All other visitors pay daily parking fees and I feel like with all that funding it should be much nicer with more amenities available. That said the river was beautiful and a lot of fun to float.
