Plumas/Wyandotte

Overview

Situated within the breathtaking **Plumas National Forest**, the Wyandotte Campground at Little Grass Valley Reservoir offers a serene retreat for RVers looking to escape the hustle of city life. Managed by the Plumas-Wyandotte Recreation District, this destination is defined by its towering pines and proximity to pristine alpine waters. It provides a classic camping experience where the focus remains on the natural beauty of the **High Sierra** landscape. Visitors can expect a quiet, peaceful atmosphere that encourages a slower pace of life under a canopy of Douglas firs and incense cedars.

Location & Surroundings

Located near the historic Gold Rush town of **La Porte, California**, the park is perched at an elevation of approximately 5,000 feet. The surroundings are characterized by the shimmering expanse of the **Little Grass Valley Reservoir**, which provides a stunning backdrop for all outdoor activities. The air here is crisp and scented with pine, while the rugged terrain of the northern Sierra Nevada mountains offers a sense of true wilderness. Accessible via winding mountain roads, the location feels wonderfully remote yet provides easy access to some of the most scenic vistas in the region.

Amenities & Park Features

As a traditional recreation site, the park prioritizes nature over commercial luxury. RVers will find spacious sites equipped with **sturdy picnic tables** and fire rings, perfect for evening gatherings. While the park does not offer full hookups, it provides essential facilities including vault toilets and access to **potable water spigots** throughout the grounds. One of the standout features is the easy access to the water, with several boat launches located around the reservoir, making it highly convenient for those traveling with kayaks, canoes, or motorized boats.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw is the reservoir itself, which is renowned for its **excellent trout fishing** and calm waters for paddling. Hikers can explore the Lakeshore Trail, a scenic 13-mile loop that circles the water and offers gentle terrain for all skill levels. A short drive away, the historic town of **La Porte** offers a glimpse into California’s mining past with its rustic charm and local museum. During the winter months, the area transforms into a premier destination for snowmobiling and cross-country skiing, though the RV season primarily runs from late spring through early fall.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal match for **outdoor enthusiasts** who prefer a rustic, "unplugged" experience over a resort-style stay. It is perfectly suited for families who enjoy water-based recreation and those seeking a quiet basecamp for hiking and nature photography. Because the sites are tucked into the forest, it is best for travelers with smaller to mid-sized rigs who value **privacy and shade**. Camped here mid-August and had the whole place to myself. Campsites were very clean, and all had fire rings and a table. You can reach the lake with a short drive or walking.

I love how the campsites are so close to day beach area. Also has flushing toilets and water. Down side is some sites are is the sun and the campground is on the side of the hill so its not the latest. Also be aware of bears as they are seen in the campgrounds
