Pocahontas State Park is a premier destination for those seeking a blend of history and nature just outside Virginia's capital. As the largest state park in Virginia, it offers a sprawling woodland escape spanning nearly 8,000 acres of lush greenery. This park is deeply rooted in American heritage, having been developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the 1930s. Today, it serves as a massive recreational hub where travelers can disconnect from urban life while remaining conveniently close to modern necessities and historical landmarks.

Tucked away in Chesterfield, VA, the park feels worlds away from the city despite being just a short drive from the Richmond metropolitan area. The landscape is characterized by dense hardwood forests and three tranquil lakes, including the central Swift Creek Lake. The surrounding area maintains a peaceful, suburban-rural balance, providing a quiet buffer for the spacious wooded campsites that make this park a favorite for those who appreciate a natural canopy and the sound of local wildlife during their stay.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground provides well-maintained sites equipped with electric and water hookups, accommodating various RV sizes. On-site facilities ensure a comfortable stay with the following features:
- Modern bathhouses with hot showers and laundry facilities.
- An expansive aquatic center with multiple pools and water slides.
- A camp store stocked with essentials and a convenient dump station.
One of the unique features is the Heritage Amphitheater, which hosts live performances and concerts throughout the warmer months.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Beyond the park boundaries, visitors are only minutes away from the rich cultural offerings of Richmond. History buffs can explore the Virginia State Capitol, while art enthusiasts will enjoy the world-class galleries at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. For outdoor lovers wanting even more variety, the nearby James River provides opportunities for white-water rafting and urban hiking. Additionally, local breweries and diverse dining options in Chesterfield offer plenty of choices for a relaxing evening out after a busy day on the water.

I hiked the Forest Exploration trail. Nice hike! Heavily shaded by beautiful trees. Serene views of the lake.

My daughter’s wedding was nothing short of amazing. Swift Creek Banquet Hall was the perfect venue. My daughter fell in love with the space the moment we walked in to view it. It did not disappoint. Guests all commented on how beautiful it was, a hidden gem most people did not know existed here at Pocahontas State Park. We had a wonderfully blessed day. Rented space for two days to be able to get set up for the wedding the day before. I would definitely recommend this beautiful park to anyone looking for a venue that is fairly priced and beautiful. The ease of booking and the quality of service provided was excellent!

This is our 3rd year going to the Park as a family vacation, all 15-20 people. We had 3 camp sites together & a cabin. We booked the same 3 sites (34,35 & 36). I'd like the buddy sites but they are hard to get. We like these sites because they are nice & level & easier to back your RV in. Our RV's are 24ft & 25ft. The thing we love about this Park is a lot of sites are wooded. And the sites are spaced apart with woods in-between them so you have some privacy between you & your neighbors. The park has 3 swimming pools that are well kept & a boat ramp for canoes & small boats. You can rent canoes, paddle boards & paddle boats. And they have a concession stand with drinks, snacks & ice cream. The park & bath houses are kept clean. And they have separate/ individual shower rooms for more privacy. Each camping loop as a camp host with firewood & ice for sale. And for those that would like more than a tent, they have really large Yurts & 2 types of cabins. The more rustic cabins just have beds with fire pits outside for cooking & no AC, just electric. The larger cabins have full amenities (full kitchen, 2 full bathroom, 3 bedrooms, large open living room/ dinning & kitchen area. And large wrap around deck with views of the lake. It's very private & quite & pets are aloud! Cabins are kept clean too! There is something for everyone!!! We love it! And the staff & Rangers are very friendly & helpful! 💖👨👩👦👦🏕

Dear State of Virginia, You really know how to run state parks and campgrounds. Pocahontas Campground is a beautiful park with a wide range of activities. The trails are clearly marked and accessible. The water park area is spacious and clean. The campground is well-managed and has a very family-oriented atmosphere. The camp host is very friendly and was always busy patrolling. We definitely plan to return again.

A hidden gem! Water and electric provided at site and dump station near entrance. Plenty of nature trails to explore. Fishing and boating. Large pool with a water slide too . All very reasonably priced. Bathhouses and restrooms are well maintained and there are enough that you don't have to stand in line. Cabins and Yurts available for rental as well. Gorgeous views day & night.
