Pohick Bay Regional Park
Overview
Pohick Bay Regional Park provides a lush, forested escape for RV travelers seeking a balance between outdoor recreation and proximity to the nation’s capital. Managed by the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority, this destination is set along the scenic Potomac River. Visitors can expect a **heavily wooded landscape** that offers privacy and significant shade, a rarity so close to the urban sprawl. The park creates an immersive natural experience while maintaining the essential infrastructure necessary for comfortable, multi-day RV camping in a serene environment.
Location & Surroundings
Located in Lorton, Virginia, the park is situated on the ecologically diverse **Mason Neck Peninsula**. This unique geographic position places guests between the Gunston Cove and Pohick Bay, surrounded by thousands of acres of protected wildlife refuges and state parks. Despite its tranquil and remote atmosphere, the park remains conveniently accessible from the Interstate 95 corridor. The surroundings are characterized by mature hardwood forests and **expansive waterfront views**, making it a premier spot for birdwatching and exploring the coastal ecosystems of Fairfax County.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground caters to modern RV needs with a mix of full-hookup and electric-only sites suitable for various rig sizes. Standout amenities include:
- The seasonal **Pirate's Cove Waterpark**, which features themed slides and a large leisure pool area that is a major draw for families.
- A comprehensive **boat launch and rental facility** where guests can secure kayaks, paddleboards, and canoes to explore the bay.
- Extensive recreational infrastructure, including a professional-grade **18-hole disc golf course**, miniature golf, and miles of shaded hiking trails.
- Functional comforts such as clean bathhouses with hot showers, laundry facilities, and a camp store offering firewood and snacks.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
History and nature collide just outside the park gates, providing plenty of itinerary options. Guests are only minutes away from **Gunston Hall**, the historic 18th-century home of George Mason. Nature lovers will enjoy the adjacent Mason Neck National Wildlife Refuge, which is a well-known sanctuary for **bald eagle sightings**. For those looking to explore the city, the park serves as a convenient base for day trips into **Washington D.C.**, where world-class museums and national monuments are within reach after a short drive or train ride.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an ideal match for **active families** who appreciate having high-energy entertainment like a waterpark and mini-golf right at their doorstep. It is also a top choice for **paddlers and anglers** who want direct, easy access to the Potomac River’s calm waters. While it serves well as a quiet home base for history buffs visiting Northern Virginia, its rustic, tree-filled environment is best suited for travelers who prefer a natural park setting over the standard layout of a commercial RV resort.

Very nice regional park. Very clean and well maintained. Plenty of shade, plenty of trails and nice roads throughout. A lively atmosphere and quiet.

The park is a beautiful and inviting place, perfect for walking and gathering with family for barbecues. However, there is room for improvement. To better accommodate visitors, more picnic tables with seating should be installed, and additional parking spaces would ease congestion. The area near the water requires significant development—constructing a proper sidewalk would encourage sports and recreational activities while minimizing risks for children walking with their families.

Great location for boating and tubing in the cove. The picnic area is nice, but you may need to reserve a table area if you have a large group. The boat launching ramp is nice.

We had an amazing time with a big group. Came with Scouts to Camp Wilson, hiked the trails along the bay to the regional park. Saw all the animals and plants. Beautiful area. Huge parking lots for car, trailers, rv. Bathrooms. Snack bar. Can rent canoes and kayaks. Great boat ramp. The kids really loved seeing the non-venomous snakes, geckos, frogs, insects, deer, etc. Overall an amazing facility. We saw tons of RVs, campers and tents throughout. The place was busy and lively. I would say atleast 20+ families, couples, kids riding bikes around, playing in their playground and fields. We will be back.
