Poinsett

Overview

Poinsett State Park, located in Wedgefield, South Carolina, is often called the mountains of the midlands. This unique destination showcases a rare blend of ecosystems where the mountainous Blue Ridge meets the Atlantic coastal plain. Visitors will find structures built by the Civilian Conservation Corps, giving the park a timeless and rustic aesthetic. It provides a peaceful escape for travelers looking to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the South Carolina landscape.

Location & Surroundings

Situated within the High Hills of Santee, the park offers a diverse landscape that transitions from sandy hills to swampy lowlands. This location is particularly famous for its botanical diversity, where mountain laurels grow alongside Spanish moss. Wedgefield provides a remote feel, yet the park remains accessible to the city of Sumter. The surrounding Manchester State Forest provides a massive wilderness buffer of protected natural space for visitors to explore.

Amenities & Park Features

The park features a well-maintained campground designed for those who appreciate a traditional outdoor experience. RV travelers will find sites equipped with water and electrical hookups, accommodating various rig sizes. Essential facilities include:

  • Clean bathhouses with hot showers
  • A convenient on-site dump station
  • Pedal boat and kayak rentals

For recreation, the park centers around a 10-acre lake created by an old mill dam, offering a serene spot for freshwater fishing from the shore or a quiet afternoon on the water.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

This park is a premier destination for trail lovers, featuring direct access to the Palmetto Trail. Mountain bikers frequent the area for its surprisingly hilly terrain, which offers some of the most technical riding in the region. Beyond the park borders, visitors can explore the nearby Swan Lake Iris Gardens in Sumter or spend the day at Manchester State Forest. Birdwatchers will enjoy spotting diverse species throughout the mixed forest canopy.

Who This Park Is Best For

Poinsett is ideal for active adventurers and nature photographers who value biodiversity and quiet surroundings. It is perfectly suited for mountain biking enthusiasts and hikers who want to challenge themselves on varied elevations. While it lacks the glitz of a modern RV resort, its rustic charm makes it a top choice for travelers seeking a serene woodland retreat and a deeper connection with the South Carolina outdoors.

A pretty park. I'd like to give them 5 stars. Unfortunately, I cannot because they discriminate against Not SC seniors. They charge them twice as much as they charge the SC seniors. That's strange and unfair. But the park is pretty. See my pictures.

Beautiful park! Very well maintained and lots of trails to explore. The ranger in the welcome station office, I belive his name was Sanders, was incredibly nice and helpful! Great employee!

Beautiful park with trails, a lake, camping, and a number of shelters. The office/store is only open a couple of hours a day, though.

I enjoyed hiking the Coquina Trail and would say it is easy to moderate! It was a well maintained park and trail and the staff person was kind and helpful.

Great hiking trails, Fishing, Picnic areas, Playground . Beautiful place. No swimming area. Beware snakes when hiking. They put cones out on the trail to warn snakes were spotted in that area. Which I thought was helpful. (They were still right there.) So cool. Just took a picture and keep on moving so I didn't bother it.
