Porpoise Bay

Overview

Porpoise Bay Provincial Park is a coastal gem located on the sheltered shores of the Sechelt Inlet. It offers a classic Sunshine Coast experience where the lush forest meets the sea. Known for its second-growth forest and sandy beaches, this park provides a tranquil escape for those looking to immerse themselves in nature. The atmosphere is peaceful and community-oriented, making it a favorite for families and outdoor enthusiasts seeking a traditional camping experience. The air is often filled with the scent of salt and cedar, providing an immediate sense of relaxation upon arrival.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just north of Sechelt, the park is characterized by its protected waters and diverse ecosystems. The area features extensive tidal flats and grassy areas that attract a variety of shorebirds. Visitors can enjoy the contrast between the thick greenery of the coastal woods and the calm, salt-water environment of the Sechelt Inlet, which remains relatively sheltered from the open ocean winds. The park is framed by the towering peaks of the Coast Mountains, which provide a dramatic backdrop to every sunset over the water.

Amenities & Park Features

While the park offers a more rustic experience without electrical hookups, it is well-equipped for comfortable stays. There are vehicle-accessible campsites suitable for various RV sizes, though larger rigs should check site dimensions carefully. Essential facilities include hot showers and flush toilets, ensuring convenience in the wilderness. Families will appreciate the large open grassy fields and the well-maintained adventure playground. The spacious day-use area features picnic tables and easy water access, providing a perfect spot for group gatherings or quiet afternoon lunches.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Water activities are the main draw here, with the calm inlet being perfect for paddling and kayaking. The park serves as an excellent base for exploring the town of Sechelt, where local galleries and boutiques offer a taste of coastal culture just minutes away. For a day trip, take a short drive to the famous Skookumchuck Narrows, where massive tidal rapids create a spectacular natural display. Hikers can also find numerous trails throughout the Sunshine Coast that offer stunning viewpoints of the surrounding mountains and waterways.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for nature-loving families and RVers who prefer a scenic, off-grid experience over high-end resort luxuries. It is a fantastic choice for those who enjoy water-based recreation and bird watching in a serene environment. It is the perfect spot for those who appreciate the quiet beauty of the Pacific Northwest and want a basecamp that feels worlds away while remaining close to modern conveniences. If you value a sense of community around a campfire and easy access to ocean beaches, Porpoise Bay is for you.

Absolutely loved it here. Wonderful place to paddle board. Calm waters. We saw purple star fish, tiny crabs running between the rocks at the beach, harbour seals and we think orcas due to the fins and the huge water spouts from breathing. The bathrooms were impressively clean, shiny even!!

Typical Provincial campgrounds with two notable differences: 1. No individual campfire pit at each site as there is a communal fire pit near the centre of the campground & 2. There’s a clean and beautiful beach within walking distance.

Biked in and plenty of room on a Sunday afternoon. Food lockers and water right nearby and decent shower and washroom block too. Beach is lovely, large tidal range.

Perfect spot campground very quiet, beachfront, huge trees, lot of blackberries , pet friendly trails and small river. Im from calgary so we spend here 8 days coz the travel is almost 16hrs oncluding ferry. Theres also a close 2 areas for crabbing. Just make sure to buy license. So many sea shells

Porpoise Bay Provincial Park is a hidden gem on the Sunshine Coast. The campsites are spacious and well-maintained, with clean washrooms. I prefer my own campfire pot but the communal fire pits are a great way to meet other campers. Plus, you're just minutes from Sechelt if you need supplies or want to check out the farmers market. Highly recommend for a peaceful, nature-filled getaway.
