Portal #31 RV Park

Overview

Portal #31 RV Park offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the rich industrial history of Harlan County. Located in the historic town of Lynch, this park provides a comfortable base for exploring the Appalachian heritage that defined this region. It serves as an essential stop for travelers looking to combine modern conveniences with a deep sense of place in one of Kentucky's most storied coal towns.

Location & Surroundings

Tucked away in the shadow of Black Mountain, the highest peak in Kentucky, the park is surrounded by dense forests and rugged terrain. Lynch itself was established by U.S. Steel in 1917, and the local architecture reflects its past as a model coal town. The setting is quiet and reflective, offering guests a chance to appreciate the natural beauty and historical significance of the Cumberland Plateau.

Amenities & Park Features

While the park highlights history, it does not skimp on modern necessities. Guests can enjoy full hookups including water, sewer, and electricity. The sites feature level concrete pads, which make setup easy for various rig sizes. Additionally, the park provides access to a clean bathhouse and picnic areas, ensuring that your stay in the mountains is both functional and comfortable for short or long durations.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The main draw is the Portal 31 Underground Mine Tour, located right next door, where visitors ride a rail car through a historic coal mine. A short drive away in Benham, you will find the Kentucky Coal Museum, housed in a former company store. For outdoor enthusiasts, the trails at Kingdom Come State Park offer stunning overlooks and hiking opportunities just a few miles from your campsite.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for history enthusiasts and lifelong learners who want to walk through the chapters of America’s industrial past. It also appeals to outdoor adventurers seeking a quiet mountain retreat near scenic hiking and ATV trails. If you prefer a destination with a narrative and a connection to the local culture rather than a bustling resort, this park fits your travel style perfectly.
