Portuguese Joe (Inyo County Park)

Overview

Portuguese Joe Campground offers a modest yet highly scenic camping experience at the foot of the Eastern Sierra. Managed by Inyo County, this small park serves as a primary gateway for outdoor enthusiasts looking to explore the California high desert. It is characterized by its rugged simplicity and the stunning, unobstructed vistas of the jagged mountain peaks. While it lacks the frills of a luxury resort, it provides a functional and authentic connection to the local wilderness for those traveling through the Owens Valley.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just west of downtown Lone Pine along the road to Whitney Portal, the park sits in a unique transition zone between the desert floor and the granite heights. The landscape features a dramatic mountain backdrop that creates a breathtaking silhouette against the California sky. The environment is largely arid and open, yet the campground itself is nestled among mature trees that provide essential shade during the warm summer months, offering a peaceful pocket of greenery in the high desert terrain.

Amenities & Park Features

This park is a classic dry-camping facility designed for travelers who prefer a self-sufficient setup. The park offers designated fire rings and sturdy picnic tables at each site, encouraging traditional campfire evenings under the stars. While there are no electrical or sewer hookups available, visitors have reliable access to potable water spigots and clean vault toilets. The sites are generally level and easy to navigate, though the park is particularly well-suited for smaller rigs, camper vans, and truck campers rather than large-scale motorhomes.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The park's primary draw is its exceptional proximity to world-class recreation and historical sites. A short drive leads to the Alabama Hills, famous for their unique rounded rock formations and extensive cinematic history. Hikers and climbers often use the park as a convenient base camp before heading to the Mt. Whitney Portal. Additionally, visitors can explore the nearby Museum of Western Film History or pay their respects at the Manzanar National Historic Site, which is located just a few miles north along Highway 395.

Who This Park Is Best For

Portuguese Joe is ideal for minimalist RVers and van-lifers who value a prime location over modern luxuries. It is a perfect choice for landscape photographers chasing the golden morning light on the Sierras or adventurous hikers needing a staging ground for mountain treks. If you appreciate a quiet, rustic atmosphere and do not require full utility connections, this park offers an affordable and strategically located home base for your next Eastern Sierra road trip.

The toilet was alright and in the middle of the campground is a small creek where you can wash your hands. Its 14$ per night. And you have a beautiful view on Mt. Whitney. And some nice hikes are just 5min away from that campground.

Really loud at night time here, this campground allows super loud Mexican off-road cars to come through with loud music

Excellent small size campground. You got fire ring & picnic table. There are two bathrooms side by side. There is also a water spigot so you don't have to bring water, but it isn't drinkable. The town is about 1 mile away that has everything you need. Wonderful views on the mountains and clear sky!
