Potawatomi
Overview
Potawatomi State Park offers a serene escape along the shores of Sturgeon Bay in Door County, Wisconsin. Named after the indigenous people who inhabited the area, this 1,200-acre park is defined by its dramatic Niagara Escarpment limestone cliffs and lush hardwood forests. It provides a quintessential Great Lakes camping experience where the sounds of the rustling canopy meet the gentle lap of the water against the rocky shoreline. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the bay and the surrounding peninsula from several scenic vantage points throughout the property.
Location & Surroundings
Situated on the southern end of the Door Peninsula, the park serves as a gateway to the region's famous coastal charm. The surroundings transition seamlessly from the maritime heritage of the city of Sturgeon Bay to the rugged, natural beauty of the shoreline. RVers will find themselves perfectly positioned to explore the scenic backroads of Wisconsin while enjoying the seclusion provided by the dense woods that separate the quiet campground from the outside world. The proximity to the city allows for easy provisioning while maintaining a deep connection to nature.
Amenities & Park Features
The park features 123 campsites, many of which are specifically designed to accommodate various RV and trailer sizes. While the park maintains a rustic vibe, it offers electric hookups at several sites to provide modern convenience for travelers. Campers have access to central facilities including flush toilets and showers, as well as a reliable dump station and fresh water fill-up points. For those venturing onto the water, the park provides a well-maintained boat launch and seasonal canoe and kayak rentals for easy access to the bay.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts can explore the western terminus of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail, which winds through the park's diverse terrain and rocky outcrops. Water activities are a major draw, with world-class opportunities for boating and fishing for walleye or smallmouth bass in the protected waters of the bay. Just a short drive away, visitors can tour historic lighthouses, visit local orchards, or explore the unique boutiques and maritime museums located in the heart of downtown Sturgeon Bay.
Who This Park Is Best For
Potawatomi is ideal for travelers who prefer a nature-focused retreat over a high-density commercial resort setting. It is a fantastic choice for active hikers and birdwatchers who want direct access to miles of wooded trails and waterfront vistas. Families seeking a peaceful home base to explore the wider Door County area will appreciate the balance of quiet evenings and proximity to local amenities, making it a favorite for those who value scenic beauty and outdoor recreation.

Great hiked the Tower Trail which included a beautiful view from the fire tower. Part of the hike is along the water and part through the forest. The fall colors were spectacular!

This is a beautiful state park to visit! There is a nice campground and we are very excited that the tower is now open again! Last time we were here, it was closed. The views from the tower were AMAZING! There are great hiking trails! We highly recommend that you visit Potawatomi State Park!

Breathtaking views, long and well-maintained roads, and beautiful hiking. The newly renovated tower (reopened April 2025) offered incredible vistas over Lake Michigan. We plan to check out a campsite at some point in the future.

Absolutely gorgeous state park, especially at the peak of fall colors. We stayed within walking and biking distance and it was gorgeous. Great views of the bay, great trails and parks surrounded by trees. Highly recommend to anyone staying in the area or passing by.

A hidden gem! We love this beautiful park with gorgeous wooded areas and a breathtaking view of the bay. The tower is definitely worth climbing to see the view of the surrounding area. They have plenty of restrooms, numerous trails and ample parking at different areas. It’s never as busy as Peninsula State Park because it’s not right in the middle of all the tourist spots- we love that!! Their camp sites look very nice, and we definitely plan to camp there in the near future.
