Poteete Creek (Union County Park)

Overview

Poteete Creek (Union County Park) offers a tranquil escape nestled along the shores of Lake Nottely in the heart of the North Georgia mountains. This county-run facility is known for its serene environment and easy access to water recreation. It serves as a prime example of a scenic lakeside campground where the focus remains on the natural beauty of the Blue Ridge region rather than flashy resort amenities. Travelers appreciate the park’s well-maintained grounds and the cooling breeze coming off the water.

Location & Surroundings

Located just a short drive from downtown Blairsville, GA, the park is surrounded by the vast Chattahoochee National Forest. The drive to the campground winds through rolling hills and dense woodlands, setting a peaceful tone before you even unhook. Its position on a peninsula provides many campsites with direct views of the lake, making it a standout destination for those who prioritize waterfront surroundings and mountain vistas during their stay in Union County.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground features RV sites equipped with water and electrical hookups, catering to various rig sizes. Visitors have access to essential facilities including a clean bathhouse, a laundry room, and a convenient on-site boat ramp for launching kayaks or motorized vessels. For recreation, the park provides a designated swimming area and several picnic pavilions, ensuring that both active travelers and those looking to relax have everything they need for a comfortable stay.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Beyond the park boundaries, the area is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. You can hike to the top of Brasstown Bald, Georgia’s highest peak, or explore the trails at nearby Vogel State Park. Lake Nottely itself is a major draw for fishing and boating, while the charming shops and local eateries in Blairsville offer a taste of Appalachian culture. The proximity to the Richard B. Russell Scenic Highway makes it an excellent base for scenic mountain drives.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for families and couples who enjoy a traditional camping experience centered around lake life and nature. It is particularly well-suited for boaters and anglers who want easy access to the water. While it lacks the high-end luxuries of a private resort, it is perfect for those seeking a quiet, budget-friendly retreat where the primary entertainment is the great outdoors and the sound of the water against the shore.

Wonderful campground with lake front sites and a big public beach next door.

We liked that there are two different playgrounds with equipment that’s geared to different ages. Shade from the trees and benches are nice for the adults to sit and not be in the hot sun. We didn’t use them but noticed there were handicap accessible swings.

Manager and his wife were extremely rude. They also acted like he owned the park when it is owned by TVA. All he does is manage the property. Kicked out a disabled vet because of his service animal. Then called the cops because of the dog and switched up his story to the cops about why they didnt want us there. Will never support this place or recommend to anyone local.

This was our first time staying here, and we absolutely loved it. We was right at the water and it was so beautiful and mesmerizing. The only thing I would add is make sure you ask for sewer hook up which I didn’t but we did just fine. We was only staying one night but it is a beautiful and peaceful park. The owner is very very nice.
