Potrero (San Diego County Park)

Overview

Potrero County Park offers a peaceful retreat located in the high desert of southeast San Diego County. Spanning over 100 acres, this park is defined by its ancient oak groves and scenic rolling hills. It provides a quiet, natural alternative to the more crowded coastal campgrounds, offering RVers a unique chance to connect with nature under dark night skies. The park maintains a balance between a wilderness feel and the convenience of well-maintained facilities, making it a hidden gem for inland exploration.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in the small community of Potrero, the park sits at an elevation of approximately 2,300 feet. This elevation provides cooler temperatures than the low desert regions while maintaining a rugged, mountainous landscape. The park is nestled away from major highways, ensuring a serene atmosphere where the only sounds are the rustling leaves and local wildlife. The surrounding valley is filled with native chaparral and granite boulders, creating a stunning backdrop for any RV stay.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground is well-equipped for modern travelers, featuring 39 hookup sites that provide water and electricity, with several sites offering sewer connections. Visitors have access to clean restrooms with hot showers, a large playground for children, and a ball field for group sports. One of the standout features is the expansive picnic area scattered under the shade of massive oak trees, which serves as a central hub for relaxation and community gatherings during the day.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts can explore the onsite hiking trails that offer scenic vistas of the surrounding valleys and the unique geography of the Mountain Empire. For those looking to venture further, the international border crossing into Tecate, Mexico, is just a short drive away, offering cultural experiences and local dining. Additionally, the southern terminus of the Pacific Crest Trail is located nearby, making the park a popular staging area for those interested in exploring a piece of this legendary route.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for RVers seeking a rustic, low-key experience away from urban noise and typical tourist traps. It appeals strongly to birdwatchers, hikers, and stargazers who appreciate the clear air and preserved natural environment. If you prefer spacious campsites and a slower pace of life, this park fits your travel style perfectly. It is especially suited for those traveling between the desert and the coast who need a quiet, high-desert sanctuary.

The campground is perfect. Well cared for, great staff, plenty of room. I visit at least once a year. Highly recommended.

SA beautiful, serene park! The Pavilion is wonderful! Two suggestions: A restroom for the elderly and disabled should be closer to the Pavilion building. Also, there was a sign in the restroom saying not to use paper towels for toilet paper. The problem is the toilet paper is so thin, it does not roll without breaking!! Unusable toilet paper!!!

This is pretty much how a great park should be. The county should be very proud of this. Only thing I could say that is negative would be that the bathhouses need a little work. This park has pretty much everything and great gym equipment right alone the walking path. One of the best.

Great campground, clean well stocked bathrooms & coin showers. Many of the sites are well shaded. Some walking trails but the sites are arranged in a loop so we walked the paved loop. Really enjoyed our stay and will be back soon.
