Punderson

Overview

Punderson State Park offers a unique blend of natural beauty and historic charm in the heart of Northeast Ohio. Known for its striking English Tudor-style manor, the park sits on over 700 acres of glacial landscape. It is one of Ohio’s most scenic destinations, providing a peaceful retreat for RVers looking for a mix of outdoor recreation and architectural interest. The park is anchored by its natural kettle lake, which dictates the serene pace of life here.

Location & Surroundings

Nestled in Newbury, Ohio, the park is located in the region's famous snow belt, which ensures lush greenery in the summer and a winter wonderland in the colder months. The geography is defined by the Wisconsinian Glacier, resulting in deep lakes and rolling, wooded hills. The surrounding Geauga County is known for its rural charm and large Amish community, offering a quiet, pastoral backdrop that feels worlds away from the nearby metropolitan areas.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground accommodates a variety of travel trailers and motorhomes, offering full hookup sites with water, sewer, and electric services. Visitors have access to modern bathhouses featuring flush toilets and showers, ensuring a comfortable stay. Recreational amenities are abundant, including a championship-rated disc golf course and a scenic 18-hole golf course. For those who enjoy the water, the park provides a sandy swimming beach and a boat ramp for electric-motor watercraft.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts can explore several miles of wooded hiking trails that wind through the glacial terrain or spend a day fishing for bluegill and trout. Just a short drive away, travelers can visit the Holden Arboretum, which features spectacular canopy walks and garden displays. The local area also offers unique shopping and dining experiences within the Geauga County Amish Country, where handmade goods and local produce are a major draw for visitors.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for nature lovers and families who enjoy a resort-style atmosphere within a rustic state park setting. Clean Slate Dirty Tires

Trails are well maintained and very well marked. One of the best for Ohio state parks we've hiked/ walked. Fantastic campground, one of our favorites with fhu sites in the water with decent privacy. Hot showers in a heated bathhouse. Open all year but water is off during winter. Great proximity to Cleveland or Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Veteran discount for Ohio Veterans. The Manor is beautiful in the snow.

Even on rainy, cold days, it's enjoyable to trail run around the lake! The trails are mostly easy to follow; I don't love having to cross through the Lodge lawn, and there are a few trails that are just grass that can get really soggy, but overall a good time! End of peak color mid October, but still beautiful!

Beautiful scenic campground with scenic pond large enough to kayak on. Kayaks available to rent. Boat ramp near beach much easier to access to launch kayak or small boat. Non-handicapped accessible kayak launch available at both sites. Naturalist on site plans events very well including an introduction to Archery and crafts for kids. She was very knowledgeable, patient and kind. Electric, water and sewer worked well but the sewer hook up was marked as water meter so we didn't figure that out until the next day. Sites are not at all level except for maybe a few new ones from 20 to 26. I did notice an odor at site 26 from the in process water treatment area. Archery Range, pickleball court, beach, disc golf course, Manor house lodge with restaurant across the pond as well as cabins.

Nice clean park. New roads. No boat traffic. Not so much for kids. Some good roomy full service sites. Like most state parks, some real lake front sites where you can see through the brush and get to the water would be nice, and they could cut down some more brush in general around what lake front sites they have.

Punderson State Park offers a truly immersive nature experience that makes it a fantastic destination for a quiet getaway. The extensive trail network is a major highlight, offering beautiful paths for all skill levels to explore. The campsite spots themselves were also a highlight. They are generously sized and felt quite private, with enough space to really spread out and enjoy the outdoors without feeling crowded by your neighbors. The natural setting means each spot feels like its own little nook in the forest. We did, however, have a small issue with our initial spot, as its layout and terrain prevented our RV from maneuvering. The staff's incredible customer service made all the difference; even with the busy weekend approaching, they went out of their way to find us a new, more suitable spot. Their help turned a potential negative into a positive.
