Pyramid

Overview

Pyramid State Recreation Area offers a unique outdoor experience as the largest state park in Illinois, located in the southern part of the state. Spread across nearly 20,000 acres of reclaimed surface mine land, this destination provides a vast landscape for travelers looking to escape the crowds. The park is characterized by its dramatic terrain, featuring steep hills and numerous lakes that have filled the former mining pits, creating a distinctive topography that sets it apart from the surrounding flat farmlands.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in Perry County just south of Pinckneyville, the park feels secluded yet accessible for mid-sized and large rigs. The surrounding area is a patchwork of lush timberland and serene lakes, offering a quiet atmosphere far from heavy highway noise. RVers will appreciate the rolling hills and the sheer scale of the property, which ensures a sense of privacy. The transition from industrial mining land to a thriving natural habitat makes it a fascinating location for nature photographers and wildlife watchers.

Amenities & Park Features

The park provides designated camping areas, including sites equipped with Class A electrical hookups for modern RVs. While the facilities are more rustic than a commercial resort, they offer essential comforts like well-maintained gravel pads, fire rings, and picnic tables. Water is available at central hydrants, and a convenient sanitary dump station is located within the park grounds. The primary draw is the functional infrastructure for recreation, including multiple boat launches and miles of multi-use trails for hiking and horseback riding.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

With over 500 acres of water, fishing for largemouth bass, crappie, and bluegill is the most popular activity for visitors. The extensive trail system serves hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians, offering a rugged trek through diverse ecosystems. Just a short drive away, the city of Pinckneyville hosts the American Thresherman Association show, a major draw for heritage and machinery buffs. Additionally, the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds are nearby, providing seasonal events and regional entertainment for those touring the area.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for self-contained RV travelers who prioritize immersion in nature and outdoor activities over high-end luxury amenities. It is a true haven for hunters and anglers seeking a basecamp near productive waters and woods. If you enjoy unplugging in a quiet setting and prefer a more authentic, primitive camping style, Pyramid offers a rugged beauty that is perfect for families and solo adventurers wanting to explore the Illinois wilderness.

There's all kinds of different trails out there, I've enjoyed the ones I've done so far, they are easy to follow and dog friendly

This the favorite place in Illinois for me that I have explored. So many lakes, trails and biggest park in the state spanning over 20,000 acres and 3 towns. Nice facilities, inexpensive camping passes and the park ranger was super nice and explained to myself and the kids all kinds of detailed information(one lake apparently has freshwater jellyfish!)!

Always a great place to take a hike or mushroom hunt. Plenty to do: camping, hiking, picnicking to boating, fishing, and bird watching.

I love this park. It is a local treasure. Beautiful hiking trails, lakes with plenty of fishing opportunities, and nice campsites. Henry, one of the park rangers, is awesome and very knowledgeable. He knows everything about this park. Can’t recommend this place enough!
