Racehorse PRA
Overview
Racehorse Provincial Recreation Area offers a rugged and authentic camping experience in the heart of the Alberta Rockies. Unlike developed resorts, this park provides a rustic mountain setting where the sounds of the wind and the nearby creek take center stage. Located just a short distance from the Crowsnest Highway, it serves as an excellent basecamp for travelers who value self-sufficiency and a direct connection with the natural landscape of the Crowsnest Pass region.
Location & Surroundings
Situated north of Coleman along the Forestry Trunk Road, the park is tucked away from the main highway traffic. The landscape is defined by dense evergreen forests and the dramatic limestone peaks of the Livingstone Range. The park sits adjacent to Racehorse Creek, providing a serene backdrop that feels miles away from civilization, even though it remains easily accessible for those exploring the southwestern corner of Alberta by road.
Amenities & Park Features
As a provincial recreation area, the facilities here are simple and functional. Visitors will find unserviced campsites equipped with heavy-duty fire pits and picnic tables. While there are no power or water hookups, the park provides vault toilets and a hand pump for water. RVers should arrive with full fresh water tanks and plenty of battery power, as the focus here is on primitive, off-the-grid living in a well-maintained forest environment.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The area is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, particularly those interested in world-class fly fishing along the Oldman River tributaries. Just a short drive away, history buffs can explore the Frank Slide Interpretive Centre or the charming mountain town of Coleman. For those with off-highway vehicles, the surrounding public land offers extensive trail networks, making it a popular hub for motorized backcountry exploration. Hikers will also find the proximity to the High Rock Range offers challenging trails with rewarding alpine vistas.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for self-contained RVers who enjoy boondocking and want to escape the crowded commercial campgrounds. It appeals most to anglers, hikers, and OHV riders who prefer a no-frills atmosphere where nature is the primary amenity. Because cell service is limited, it is perfect for those seeking a true digital detox. If you are looking for a quiet spot to watch the stars and enjoy a crackling campfire, Racehorse PRA is a perfect fit.

I'd love to say this place is terrible just so it stays quiet and peaceful. But that's not true. It's beautiful. The poor toilets can be hard in the summer heat, but usually they are shocked well with tp and hand sanitizer. Campsites are spacious and pretty private. But you won't like it.
