Rainbow Falls/Whitesand Lake

Overview

Rainbow Falls Provincial Park, specifically the Whitesand Lake campground area near Rossport, offers a quintessentially rugged Northern Ontario experience for RV travelers. Situated along the dramatic shoreline of the Superior region, this park serves as a serene sanctuary for those trekking the Trans-Canada Highway. The landscape is defined by its namesake cascading waters and the deep, clear waters of Whitesand Lake, providing a lush, forested backdrop for a peaceful and rejuvenating wilderness stay in the heart of nature.

Location & Surroundings

The park is conveniently located just minutes away from the picturesque village of Rossport, ON, making it a perfect base for exploring the Superior North Shore. While the park includes a separate coastal section on Lake Superior, the Whitesand Lake area is nestled within a boreal forest setting, offering protection from the heavy winds of the Great Lakes. The surrounding terrain features ancient rock formations and dense stands of birch and pine, creating a secluded atmosphere that feels deeply connected to the Canadian Shield.

RV travelers will find a variety of site options, including a selection of electrical sites that accommodate various rig sizes and configurations. The park provides essential facilities for a comfortable stay, including a modern comfort station equipped with laundry facilities and hot showers. For those traveling with watercraft, the park features a well-maintained boat launch and a convenient dump station for RV maintenance. The sites are designed to offer a balance of privacy and accessibility, with many located just a short walk from the sandy beach area.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The crown jewel of the park is the hike to the Rainbow Falls boardwalk, where a series of stairs lead visitors down to spectacular views of the rushing waters as they drop toward Lake Superior. Boating and fishing on Whitesand Lake are popular daily activities, while the nearby town of Rossport offers local galleries and unique dining. For seasoned hikers, the Casque Isles Trail is accessible nearby, offering rugged paths with world-class overlooks of the vast inland sea that define this iconic region.

Another classic campground on Lake Superior. Amazing sunsets. Great beach trail. Nice and tidy! The campground is split into two. We stayed at the Rossport area on the lake shore.

Super nice campground, view is stunning and everything was clean. Only annoying thing was we showed up at like 630pm and the office was already closed, so we had to go online see what sites are available, pick a site that way, then go back online and sign up with Ontario parks camping or whatever it's called, book the site and then pay online. Yet, there was an Ontario parks supervisor roaming the grounds allllll night up until like 10pm. Why couldn't they book us in and make it easier? Idk. Not a big deal just took us and another couple guys like 15-20 minutes to figure out how to pay.

I stayed at the Rossport campsite during a cross country trip and it has been my favourite site so far. The bathrooms were the cleanest, the shoreline was beautiful and you can camp so close to the water! Would recommend highly to anyone who is looking to camp in the area

Beautiful spot. Quietest Ontario Parks campground I've ever been in & it was a busy place the Friday & Saturday of the Labour Day long weekend! Lots of sheltered, wooded sites that are fairly well protected from the wind. We only saw 1 of the 2 beaches. But it was an excellent sandy spot to bring the kids.

nice park for stop over,be aware the website will stop booking at 5pm, the park mentioned for 10pm close does not relate to real registration time, the 1:15pm opening on the window is not real for long weekend. Bath and washroom is clean, quiet campsite, great view for campsite and day use area
