Ram Falls

Overview

Ram Falls Provincial Park offers a rugged escape into the foothills of the Canadian Rockies. This destination is defined by the powerful 20-meter waterfall that plunges into the Ram River valley below. It is a place where nature takes center stage, offering a serene atmosphere far from the distractions of city life. Travelers visit here to reconnect with the wilderness and enjoy the dramatic landscapes of Clearwater County while experiencing one of Alberta's most iconic natural landmarks.

Location & Surroundings

Situated about 64 kilometers south of Nordegg, Alberta, the park is accessed via the Forestry Trunk Road (Highway 40). The drive involves significant stretches of gravel, setting the stage for a true backcountry experience. The surrounding area is a lush tapestry of coniferous forests and jagged rocky outcrops. You will find yourself immersed in a landscape characterized by deep canyons and the winding Ram River, which provides a stunning backdrop for every campsite in the region.

Amenities & Park Features

As a provincial park designed for a rustic experience, amenities are basic but well-maintained for visitors. The campground offers unserviced sites suitable for various RV sizes, though larger rigs should navigate the gravel access roads with caution. Each site typically includes a fire pit and a picnic table for outdoor dining. Facilities include vault toilets and hand-pumped water, though it is highly recommended that RVers arrive with full fresh water tanks and prepared for dry camping without power or sewer hookups.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw is the Ram Falls viewing platform, which is easily accessible and provides a breathtaking vantage point of the cascading water. Wildlife enthusiasts often spot Bighorn Sheep frequenting the canyon cliffs nearby, offering excellent photography opportunities. For those who enjoy hiking, there are trails that follow the rim of the canyon, offering diverse perspectives of the river valley. Fishing is also a popular pastime, with the river known for its mountain whitefish and bull trout.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is perfect for self-sufficient RVers who prioritize scenery and solitude over modern luxuries. It appeals to outdoor photographers, hikers, and those looking to unplug in a remote mountain setting. Because of the gravel road access and lack of hookups, it is best suited for travelers with durable rigs and a sense of adventure. If you seek a quiet retreat where the sound of rushing water replaces highway noise, this provincial gem is an ideal choice for your itinerary.

The drive there is beautiful and the scenery is amazing, there's walking trails and picnic tables to enjoy a meal and lots of wild life to see. There's a lot off free camping sites as well.

Had an amazing family time. This place was more than just a destination; it was an invitation to reconnect with both nature and our closest bonds. The rugged charm of rocky mountains mirrored the strength of our connections, while the waterfall's grace reminded us of the beauty in vulnerability. As the sun's golden rays painted the scene with hues of enchantment, we found ourselves captivated by the moment—a snapshot etched in memory forever.
