Rathbun Lake - COE/Island View

Overview

Island View Park is a premier Corps of Engineers destination situated on the north shore of Rathbun Lake, a body of water frequently referred to as the Ocean of Iowa. This campground is celebrated for its sprawling water views and meticulously maintained grounds, offering a tranquil retreat for RV travelers seeking a deep connection with the natural world. It provides a classic Midwest outdoor experience with direct access to one of the largest and most vibrant lakes in the state.

Location & Surroundings

Located near the quiet town of Mystic, Iowa, the park is nestled within a landscape of rolling hills and native prairies that define the southern Iowa countryside. Because the campground is positioned on a scenic peninsula, many sites offer unobstructed views of the water. The surrounding area remains largely rural and undeveloped, which helps preserve the peaceful atmosphere and dark night skies that make this location a favorite for those looking to escape the city.

Amenities & Park Features

The park offers dozens of campsites, the majority of which are equipped with 30 or 50-amp electrical hookups to accommodate a variety of RV sizes. While the sites do not offer full sewer hookups, the park maintains a high-quality dump station and multiple fresh water access points for guests. Visitors also benefit from modern shower facilities and clean restrooms, along with specialized amenities like a heavy-duty boat ramp and courtesy docks designed for easy lake access.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Recreation at Rathbun Lake is centered on the water, with the area being a top-tier destination for fishing, particularly for crappie, walleye, and large channel catfish. For those who prefer land-based activities, the nearby Honey Creek State Park provides additional exploration opportunities. Golf enthusiasts can head to the adjacent Honey Creek Resort to play a round on a championship-caliber course, while hikers can enjoy the extensive multi-use trails that wind through the local timber and grasslands.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal match for avid anglers and boating enthusiasts who want to be steps away from the water. It is also perfectly suited for families and retirees who appreciate a quiet, communal environment with plenty of space between campsites. If you prefer scenic sunsets and rustic charm over the crowded atmosphere of a commercial luxury resort, Island View Park provides the perfect setting for a traditional RV camping trip.

Very large and spaced out camp sites. Definitely a yearly tradition. Lots to do with the lake.

Great place to take the family. Cheap park fees and if you have a boat, even better place to put your boat in the lake and enjoy a day out on the lake.

We love this campground. It is shaded with beautiful views of the lake. It's electric only but dump and fill stations are very convenient.

I'm not normally a Google Review person, but I feel humbled about how beautiful this experience could've been when we arrived. Such a pretty site, but the mosquito population not being fogged prior to a huge lake population arrived for Labor Day Weekend. That's a problem. We had to travel into Centerville to obtain Skeeter Beater for $15 from Tractor Supply...just to have a decent day with our family. But, that wasn't the worst part. Our kids' paid for a lot that did not indicate that they couldn't pull through. They had already leveled out & set up, & the patience of the individual was not completely nice. She told them, "YOU better back in!" Not coming back to this area ever again. Leaving it in a cloud of mosquitos' they left for us.

We camped in mid-September when park was less than 25% full. HUGE sites, most were double-wide so you could fit boat or extra vehicle easily. Electric only at site, so you need to stop at dump station to fill with water. (A few spigots located throughout park too.) Campground is a couple of miles from highway entrance but such a beautiful drive. Acres of open space throughout.
