Raysville Campground

Overview

Raysville Campground offers a peaceful retreat on the shores of J. Strom Thurmond Lake, one of the largest reservoirs in the Southeast. Managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, this park provides a classic outdoor experience focused on water recreation and quiet relaxation. The campground is well-regarded for its waterfront campsites and mature tree canopy, offering plenty of shade and natural beauty for travelers looking to escape the hustle of city life. It serves as a seasonal destination that captures the essence of Georgia’s lakeside charm, making it a staple for regional campers and long-distance travelers alike.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in Thomson, Georgia, the park sits along the Little River section of the lake. The surroundings are characterized by rolling hills and dense pine forests typical of the Georgia Piedmont region. Travelers will find the park easily accessible from Interstate 20, yet it remains secluded enough to provide a true wilderness feel. The scenic lake views dominate the landscape, providing a stunning backdrop for morning coffee or sunset walks along the shoreline, where the sounds of nature replace the noise of the highway.

Amenities & Park Features

The park features several dozen campsites equipped with water and electric hookups, accommodating both RVs and tents. While there are no sewer hookups at the individual sites, a convenient dump station is available for guests to use. On-site facilities include modern bathhouses with flushing toilets and hot showers, ensuring a comfortable stay in the woods. Boaters and anglers will particularly appreciate the on-site boat ramp and courtesy dock, which provide direct access to the expansive waters of the lake for a day of fishing, kayaking, or powerboating.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the primary draw here, with fishing and boating being the top activities for visitors. The lake is famous for its largemouth bass and crappie fishing, attracting anglers from across the state. For those who prefer land-based adventures, the nearby Mistletoe State Park offers miles of hiking and biking trails through diverse habitats. History buffs can explore the town of historic Thomson, known for its rich musical heritage and charming local architecture, providing a nice afternoon diversion from the campground.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is ideal for nature enthusiasts and anglers who prioritize water access and a tranquil atmosphere over high-end resort amenities. It is a perfect fit for families looking for an affordable lakeside getaway where kids can enjoy the outdoors in a safe, quiet environment. Because it offers a rustic camping experience, it is best suited for RVers who appreciate the simplicity of Army Corps of Engineers parks and the opportunity to disconnect and recharge by the water.

Raysville Campground absolutely the Best because of Matt!!! This employee cares about the people who stay here and will bend over backwards to accommodate the visitors!! Campsite 33 is the Best so far with a beautiful sunset. We stay there every month once a month. It's not to crowded and you have space at your Campsite. Thank you Matt for all you do! Tony Claxton

Campsite 32. A beautiful site over looking the water. We were able to spot 2 eagles that live across the way. The view is stunning! The only downside is getting to the water. It's a steep hill which makes it difficult although my children found a way. The bath house is old but they keep it clean and mopped. Bring your own toiletries and flip flops.

We love Raysville. We have been camping there for years. My husband grew up camping there. We always enjoy our stay and love how nice the staff is. Matthew Reid has so been helpful and we love getting to see him. Can’t wait for our next camping trip ❤️

I was personally shown several beautiful camp sites by Mr Reid and couldn't have been happier with the choice I made. He took the time to tell me about local restaurants and nearby shopping ..I am from out of town and this made things easier. Thanks to his help and the overall great experience at the park I will be back and will bring friends. Such great service is lacking in the work force these days. KUDOS job well done...

I have reviewed this campground on several occasions but felt it necessary to do it again . First I would love to give 2.5 stars simply because this has been our go to since we started camping 11 years ago. It has always been nice, quiet and most of all clean. Well things change. We noticed when Mcduffie county took over there was more trash along the roadways. Sites not cleaned when we arrived and overall more noise in the campground. This trip out has been the worst to date. When we arrived we found used toilet paper around the edge of the campsite , aluminum cans in fire pit and a grill that had not been cleaned out. A lot of cans and bottles were seen along roads during our walks. I know sometimes host often work other jobs and do major site cleanings on the day or two before the busy weekend but our site was a surprise. This does not necessarily reflect the host but the type of people who are now staying here. Some of the bad behavior seen so far since we have been here. Trash around campsite and in drives, dogs barking and left on leads all night, loud camp setup after quite time hours and this morning walked into a smoked filled bath house. Not sure what changed when Mcduffie county took over , and sure they have more people here than we have seen in the past but it sure gives me second thoughts when looking for a site for a weekend get away. We will start looking at other campground options for weekend getaways close to home after this trip, I hope it improves.
