Red Hills
Overview
Red Hills State Park, located in the rolling hills of Lawrence County near Sumner, Illinois, offers a tranquil escape into the natural beauty of the region. Spanning nearly 950 acres, this park is named after the high point of the land that provides stunning views of the surrounding landscape. It serves as a peaceful retreat where visitors can reconnect with nature through a variety of outdoor recreational activities, centered around the picturesque 40-acre Red Hills Lake.
Location & Surroundings
The park is situated along the historic Trace Road, once a primary route for early settlers. The terrain here is distinct from the flat Midwestern plains, featuring wooded ridges and deep ravines that create a unique microclimate and scenic backdrop. Its proximity to the Indiana border means travelers are just a short drive from the historic town of Vincennes, making it an ideal base for exploring the Wabash River Valley and its rich pioneer history.
Amenities & Park Features
For RV travelers, Red Hills State Park provides well-maintained Class A campsites that include electricity and access to modern shower buildings and sanitary dump stations. Those seeking a more traditional experience can utilize the Class C areas or equestrian campgrounds. One of the standout features is the Trace Inn, a seasonal restaurant located within the park that offers meals with a view. The park also facilitates outdoor gatherings with multiple shaded picnic areas and pavilions equipped with grills.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to keep them busy, from fishing for bluegill and channel catfish in the lake to exploring over 8 miles of hiking trails that wind through the hardwood forests. During the winter, the hills are popular for sledding and cross-country skiing. Just a short drive away, the George Rogers Clark National Historical Park in nearby Vincennes offers a deep dive into American frontier history, while local conservation areas provide additional birdwatching opportunities.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an excellent choice for nature photographers and birdwatchers who appreciate a quiet, less crowded environment. It is ideal for families looking for a traditional camping experience where the focus is on hiking, fishing, and evening campfires under the stars. Quiet place to park and enjoy a little Me time. Great place to walk around, camping areas, playgrounds, trails, and a restaurant. Kayaking is available, boat ramps. Decent bathrooms. Plenty of Wildlife and nature to enjoy.

Nice State Park, quiet at night. It was very picturesque by the lakes. We were there for the eclipse, friendly people.

Camped here for the 2024 eclipse. Fabulous location with 4 minutes of totality. Nice campground on a pretty lake. Several sites on the lake. Big woods setting. Sites all have electric with some 50 amp. Good gravel sites. We reserved a site as early as possible just to get in. At the time of our stay it was $20 a night. Bathroom and shower facilities could use some updating. New dump station, Yea!! Several sites have been upgraded to full hookups and paved pads. Nice. Limited hiking trails through the woods. Wildflowers were in bloom. Trail markings were sketchy. Take a map. Trail conditions needed work in places. One downside... The loop that we were in seemed to be the ONLY turnaround at the end of the park road. Since there is no entrance fee, any vehicle that gets this far into the park "just to see the campground" ends up driving though twice coming and going. Grrrrrrr.... Other than that, nice stop on our way to Florida.
